POV: you’re a homesteader and it’s September. I was looking around our kitchen and a few things stuck out to me and I had to laugh a little! If you’re a homesteader in September your kitchen might look a little similar! Seeds drying down on the countertop before storage, a dehydrator that’s almost constantly running. A canner that stays out on the stove until mid-late fall for ease of use. Countertops that are often full of seeds, seeds, science experiments (mead, various vinegars, salves, tinctures) more seeds, filled jars on their way to the pantry, and more seeds! There are things drying in weird places. You start to have homemade bread more often. Jars, which seemed so abundant in the spring, become more and more scarce, while the dishwasher fills up more like this rather than with cutting boards, knives, and other fresh produce processing items. Buckets and trays rarely make it back to the barn. And the most frequently used shoes stay by the back door to be put on at a moments notice! Everything starts to shift toward preparing for the season to come. I invite all of you to take a second and notice the moment you’re in and to appreciate all the hard work you’ve done to get here, whether youre a homesteader or not 🩷 s
