Our 2025 season is a wrap! We are so grateful to have found such an accepting and supportive community to share our love of delicious healthful food with! Our little 1/10th of an acre market garden has sent over 700lbs of produce out into the Lansing community as well as feeding our friends and family throughout the season thanks to you! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment to local & sustainable produce. We will see you in Spring 2026! In the meantime, make sure to visit the Allen Farmers Market and to make time for rest in this, the dark half of the year ❤️

⚠More SNAP/EBT news at our Allen Farmers Market! ⚠

➡ We will be offering "Bonus Bucks," where those who qualify for EBT/SNAP can receive up to $40 in vouchers to spend at the market on produce. This does NOT require a purchase; all you have to do is show your Michigan Bridge card.

➡ Each eligible household can receive 4 total $10 vouchers, and each individual vouchers must be spent with one vendor, as we cannot give change for transactions using these vouchers.

➡ Vouchers must be spent by the end of the year

➡ Don't forget that for Double Up Food Bucks, the $20 per day limit is lifted. This means that customers can match their FULL SNAP purchase amount with Double Up Food Bucks, and these will NOT expire.

One of our core missions is providing access to food for our community, and we're so grateful to the Fair Food Network for their quick action in creating policies and programs that make it possible for us to provide for our neighbors ❤

Our market is open every Wednesday from 3:00-6:30 PM.

POV: you’re a homesteader and it’s September. I was looking around our kitchen and a few things stuck out to me and I had to laugh a little! If you’re a homesteader in September your kitchen might look a little similar! Seeds drying down on the countertop before storage, a dehydrator that’s almost constantly running. A canner that stays out on the stove until mid-late fall for ease of use. Countertops that are often full of seeds, seeds, science experiments (mead, various vinegars, salves, tinctures) more seeds, filled jars on their way to the pantry, and more seeds! There are things drying in weird places. You start to have homemade bread more often. Jars, which seemed so abundant in the spring, become more and more scarce, while the dishwasher fills up more like this rather than with cutting boards, knives, and other fresh produce processing items. Buckets and trays rarely make it back to the barn. And the most frequently used shoes stay by the back door to be put on at a moments notice! Everything starts to shift toward preparing for the season to come. I invite all of you to take a second and notice the moment you’re in and to appreciate all the hard work you’ve done to get here, whether youre a homesteader or not 🩷 s

Get your ugly but delicious heirloom tomatoes today at Allen Farmers Market 3-6:30 pm! Heirloom tomatoes have a reputation for being oddly shaped, prone to cracking, and sometimes just plain ugly (though we prefer to think of them as unique) but what they might lack in aesthetics they make up for in flavor. In my opinion, heirloom tomatoes taste 100% better than perfect red round slicers any day of the week! Not that I’m hating on red slicers, they have their place in our hearts but don’t sleep on the chance to get ahold of these tasty treats! With the cold nights and the fact that we don’t have protected growing space for them, we can’t guarantee that we will have a steady supply in future weeks!

On Thursdays we typically spend some time processing things that came back from market for winter storage! This morning we did a batch of cherry tomatoes & I thought I’d share a food waste tip! Usually when you can tomatoes you have to remove the skins beforehand. But don’t throw the skins away!! They contain lots of great nutrients and can be repurposed! Spread them in a thin layer in your dehydrator or on a tray in the oven. Set to 125-130 (or the lowest oven temp possible) and dehydrate until they are very dry and crumbly (I don’t time it but typically it takes at least a day or so for us). Blend them up in an old coffee grinder and store in a clean jar for tomato powder! When mixed 1:1 with water you will have instant tomato paste to use in place of any recipe calling for it. You can also use it to thicken sauces and add umami flavor to any dish! Dehydrating is a major component to our long term food storage and we utilize the dehydrator to prevent food waste in a myriad of ways! Making veggie powder with scraps is just one way to prevent food from going to the landfill or compost bin.

DID YOU KNOW: our most recent batch of lettuce mix consists of all heritage varieties?! We find that the taste and texture are far superior to many of the hybrid varieties we have tried. We are also finding it to be extremely delicate. Which is great for your salad but not great for cutting, washing, and packing it as baby leaf lettuce. This week we opted for full sized leaves and mini heads of lettuce. We dunked them in water to help maintain their crispness and swished them around a little to help dislodge and debris. This does mean we recommend washing your lettuce when you go to eat it! It also means a little more prep work for you chopping it for salad, but we think the improved flavor is 100% worth it!

We will have this beautiful lettuce and a ton of other produce TONIGHT Allen Farmers Market 3-6:30pm! Hope to see you there!
