When people ask if I made every ingredient from scratch, I’ll make a joke and say, “Well, I didn’t mine the salt.” Not everything needs to start at the source. The real skill is knowing what’s worth making yourself. If an ingredient is central to the dish, or something you’ll use across several meals, it earns the consideration to take the time to make it yourself. But everything else can stay simple. That’s how scratch cooking stays practical instead of tedious. Make the things that matter from scratch, and don’t feel obligated to do it all.

Sunday food thought:

Most people think cooking from scratch means lots of ingredients and complicated recipes. It usually doesn’t.

Scratch cooking is really about making components, not entire meals from zero all at once.

A simple flavored butter.
A quick stock made from leftovers.
A sauce you can throw together in five minutes.

None of those things are hard on their own.
They’re small, simple recipes that come together to make something better than the shortcut version ever could.

When you stop thinking “many ingredients” and start thinking “a few easy building blocks,” scratch cooking becomes approachable.

And honestly, more enjoyable.

Great food isn’t complicated. It’s intentional.
