Finally got my sourdough starter going again. Although my attempt at fancy cuts failed, I'll keep practicing. 😂

Well...I had a goal this year of growing and preserving at least 150lbs of tomatoes. I grew and canned 100lbs of crushed tomatoes last year and we went through them all so I upped my game. I stopped weighing everything after about 30lbs but im pretty sure I've surpassed my goal and we still have a few weeks until frost 😅

Cherry tomatoes are making "yard sauce" for the freezer, I've canned sauce, crushed tomatoes, salsa, bloody Mary mix, tomato soup, and BBQ sauce. I'm working on ketchup and more sauce today. I see tomatoes when I close my eyes...

Side note, this is first year that I've ordered the majority of my seeds from and the Fantastic f1 hybrid tomatoes are HUGE, the one I weighed was about 11oz

Fluffy chicks!

On top of raising layer hens we have also been raising our own meat birds (cornish cross) for about 2 years now. This is our third batch this summer and we will grow them out for about 8 weeks. After they get a bit bigger we will move them into the chicken "tractor" to be moved everyday to fresh grass.

Thank you to my Grandma for coming over and canning with me today! 6 pints of blackberry jam, 16 half pints of cucumber relish, 2 quarts of bread and butter fridge pickles, and 3 quarts of fridge dill pickles.

I'm finally starting to get tomatoes, just a couple at a time for now with tons still green on the vines. Im hoping this heat continues to push them along. In the mean time we're drowning in summer squash and cucumbers 😂

I'm going to try my hand at drying these herbs and flowers and infusing them into oils for soap. Bonus that it kept the little one busy enough picking them not to trample the rest of my garden 😅

The garden is picking up the pace! Lime crisp cucumbers might be my new favorite. I also pulled the canner out for the first batch of the season (pickled beets).

I've gotten to eat 1 ripe tomato and 1 cherry tomato. I'm staring the rest down until they turn red. Bonus picture of one of the wild tomato shapes I get. Most of the funky tomato shapes come from "fasciated" blossoms, which is one or more blossoms fused together. You can pull the blossoms so the plant focuses on the "normal" blossoms but I like the odd shapes.

My garden is an overgrown weedy jungle at the moment but the scavenger hunt of finding ripe things keeps both me and the toddler entertained. Both of us are waiting impatiently for the tomatoes to ripen!

Here's a quick glimpse at what making our soaps looks like!

This one has no colorants and a phthalate free fragrance oil. The first picture shows the melted oils (tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil). The second picture is after I added the sodium hydroxide (lye) and water solution and began mixing. After the lye solution is thoroughly blended into the oils I add my fragrance (if I'm using one) and mix to "trace." There are several different levels of trace but I prefer to mix to the pudding like level you see in the 3rd picture. Then it's time to pour into loaf molds as seen in the 4th picture! After 24 hours in the mold, the bars are cut and left to cure for 4-6 weeks before getting labeled and listed.
