Farm chores look a whole lot different lately. We have drastically downsized for the time being to get our house done. It’s a bittersweet feeling for sure, but something had to give. Sweet Willow is being trained up in these easier times though, so that’s working out nicely.

Our last batch of Kune Kune piglets have almost all found a new home. We do still have 2 gilts available if anyone is interested!

Boo-boo, Buddy, and Cookie are going to a new farm together. One with more trees, I think they will be pleased. It’s bittersweet for sure.

We are taking 5 to the processor this week! If you want some delicious Pork, message me. We also have it available in our store .market.

Tiny house on the prairie.

Rob and I have been living in this tiny house for 8 months now, this was not the plan, but it’s the way the cookie crumbled. We are hoping to start construction on our main house again very soon! Until then, this little house with the natural chicory landscaping is home.

We processed a batch of Freedom Rangers over the weekend here at FFF. It always takes longer than we anticipate to set up, but once we get going we find our flow. With the butcher skills of .ut we were able to part out 2/3 of these birds. I’ve always wanted to do this but it always seemed like too big of a task! We had the help of our friend .life, who took my spot on the evisceration table which was so nice so I could pop around and tend to Willow who was overheating a bit. kept the store running and helped with clean up and packaging! Rob and Ro took the hard job of dispatch, scalding and plucking. Many hands definitely make the work a bit lighter. Pasture raised, Organically fed chicken will be coming to .market very soon!

I haven’t been to a Upick Strawberry place since I was a teenager on a road trip in Cali with the fam. Strawberry Upicks are a big thing around here and my goodness, am I glad I went! I forgot just how good fresh picked strawberries are. I don’t think I’ll be buying them from the grocery store anymore that’s for sure. Willow got a tiny taste and was wanting to shove the whole thing in her mouth! Strawberry jam, strawberry ice cream, strawberries and yogurt, strawberries and whip cream, strawberry milk, chocolate covered strawberries, frozen strawberries…..🍓

Our herd of cows has fluctuated a lot this year. Of course I wish they could all stay, but sometimes it isn’t a good fit, or they are meant for meat. I will say our current herd of 6 is happy and low stress. It really does make a difference when everyone is relaxed in the herd and they all move together as a herd. With 47 acres and daily moves to fresh grass, I like to think that our cows have it pretty good here. I look forward to when our summer feast is planted and they really get excited. My favorite part of the day is moving our cows to fresh pasture!

I don’t know which I like better, seeing cows on fresh pasture or pigs? It’s been really fun seeing what these pigs can do for our all fescue pasture. I know their manure is high in phosphorus, and it seems our pastures quite like that! These Kune Kune do just enough disturbance to the soil to where we can do a little seeding to diversify our pastures.

Spring is here, the grass is growing, the cows are happy, and I’m literally drowning in cream! I’m making lots of butter, ghee, sour cream and Robs trying to convince me to make Ice cream all the time.😅 Definitely a good and welcome problem to have.

Big Mama- My first milk cow. Many of you knew her and unfortunately shortly before Willow was born, we had to say goodbye. She had complications after her twins, we nursed her, our vet tended to her and she pulled through for a few months. Then all of a sudden she went down hill fast.

Big Mama will always have a special spot in my heart. She taught me a lot and made me want to really focus on dairy. Milk cows require a lot of knowledge, and I didn’t grow up around them. .farms recently put out a manual that I wish I had back then. If you have a cow or are getting one. I highly recommend it! Everything is great, until it’s not.

She was a fantastic mother, calf shared beautifully and had the best milk ever. She raised up the two bulls who are in our freezer. This part of farming really, really sucks.

We love you Big Mama.

These Kune Kune Pork Chops were 3 1/2 years in the making. We started off with buying young breeding stock, Cookie and Boo Boo, Buddy and Elvis. Raised them up to breeding age, bred them and raised up their babies.😅 We just picked up 5 pigs from the processor! It’s definitely the most flavorful pork I’ve ever tried and the lard we got back is beautiful! I’ve got plans to do a lot of rendering in the future!

This has definitely been a learning process, like not all pigs are great for fast growth and meat. Make sure you book your processing date early, and so on. We are learning though and excited to get better and better at raising these sweet, delicious pigs!

We will have it for sale soon in .market
