First of 4 trips off-island to the processor, stacked up over 15 days. You betcha I easily backed up my truck & trailer (or “tow behind” as the Steamship calls it) onto the freight boat at 6:30am, after loading the 5 cattle in the dark this morning. I got parked next to the p**p 💩 truck and in front of the grocery 🛒 and trash 🗑️ trucks — life’s necessities moving on & off the island, entering as something then leaving as another. My cattle were born on-island so this is their first time departing; they will return to feed our island community.

Damp morning on the farm today

One of these things is not like the other… Mermaid Farm’s tan Jersey cow decided to go on a little escapade today. A series of phone calls went down among the cattle farmers in this part of Chilmark after a “brown cow” was spotted by a couple driving. Chilmark police officer Michael (whose land my Hereford beef cattle are grazing on) got the dairy cow inside the fence so it wasn’t wandering on the road anymore. It takes a village!

FALL on the farm! 🍂🍁 We usually have muted colors on the island because of the lack of maples but sometimes you stumble upon a stunning backdrop. And today is National Farmer’s Day!

Loading up in the trailer to move to a new farm. I move the cattle every 5-12 days depending on the size of the farm. I use the panels to make a corral and line to make a chute leading to the trailer, and then walk behind them. The cattle know that the trailer brings them to new greener pastures!
