We have tons of movies and TV shows celebrating America's birthday. Thinking about it now as we approach a sort of semi-quincentennial (250th anniversary), the single best tribute I would pick is Season 2, Episode 20, "Centennial," from America's most beloved TV show, Little House on the Prairie.

In it, Michael Landon depicts the 1876 Centennial—an episode that actually aired during the 1976 Bicentennial.
I didn’t watch the series when I was young, so this is my first time watching it from the beginning. This specific episode isn't just the best of the series; it's the absolute best in my entire collection.

The character of Yuli, an immigrant who lost everything but refused to back down, truly makes the episode. He admitted his mistakes yet still valued the US as the land of freedom, saying that no other country even comes close in terms of liberty and equality.

If it weren't for the birth of this nation, the immense cultural and industrial impact it has shared with the world would not exist. It is truly the greatest event in human history. I heartily celebrate it. Happy Birthday, America!

It’s hot outside.

Business is finally picking up along with the rising temperature, but bad news might be heading your way. It’s official: we’ve entered the dreaded season for emergency HVAC tune-ups and expensive repairs.

Your unit was running completely normal during the cool season. But the second summer arrives and the outdoor temperature jumps into the 90s, the inside cooler temperature suddenly skyrockets from a crisp 40°F up to 50°F, 60°F, or higher.

So, you make the frantic emergency service call. The technician arrives, performs a "magical fix," and then scolds you for being lazy about cleaning the fins. You get hit with a massive, sky-high bill for parts you probably didn't even need—a compressor replacement, a new fan motor, extra refrigerant, a capacitor, you name it.

Headline: When the Peninsula goes "Happy Camping," it pays to be your own Tech Support.

Yesterday, a massive tree collapsed across the only road out of the Mayo Peninsula, taking the power lines down with it. While emergency crews worked to clear the "bottleneck," my store, Cox Wine & Spirits, was left in a tricky brownout—one phase was alive, but the rest were dead.

I told my customers to "Enjoy camping!" while they waited out the traffic. They got a laugh, but behind the scenes, I was managing the technical "aftermath."

Despite having an EATON commercial surge protector, the low-voltage brownout claimed a victim: the contactor coil on one of my walk-in coolers. By morning, the temp had climbed to 52°F.

Instead of waiting for a "hefty" emergency repair bill and a potential misdiagnosis, I did the troubleshooting myself:

Checked the voltage at the coil.

Manually engaged the contactor to test the compressor.

Identified the burnt coil and swapped in a spare I kept on hand.

The Lesson: In retail, "Happy Camping" is a lot easier when you have the technical skills to keep the beer cold and the lights on! 🍷⚡️
