Shenandoah Vineyards is the second oldest active winery in Virginia, and the oldest winery in the Shenandoah Valley, founded in 1976 by Jim and Emma Randel. The Randels were two visionaries, who recognized the viticultural potential of their site. Located in Edinburg on land that had been in Emma’s family since the mid-1800s, Jim and Emma planted their first 5,000 vines in 1976 and went on to enjo

y over 4 decades of success. Michael Shaps purchased Shenandoah Vineyards in the fall of 2018 after working as a winemaking consultant for Emma for several years. Michael recognized the viticultural potential of the limestone soils and drier growing conditions.
“Shenandoah is the driest county in Virginia and one of the driest east of the Mississippi River with ideal soil composition and optimal elevation.” - Michael Shaps
Michael is excited about the viticultural potential and the opportunity to revitalize the vineyards with varieties that grow especially well in the valley, and adding Alsatian varietals like pinot gris and pinot blanc to the existing old vine riesling.

Summer, bottled — three times over.

Introducing our Summer Whites Trio: the 2019 Blanc, 2019 Riesling, and 2019 Chardonnay, together in one thoughtfully curated set.

The Blanc is bright and easy. The Riesling carries that cool mountain elegance. The Chardonnay brings depth and richness to round it all out. Three Virginia whites, one season, endless pours.

Available now in the tasting room and online — because summer is better with options.

Dear Friends,

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Emma Randel, a true pioneer, one of the founding leaders of the modern Virginia wine industry.

A message from Michael Shaps:

"I am very saddened by the news today of the passing of Emma Randel. She was a true pioneer and one of the founding leaders of the modern Virginia wine industry. I had the great fortune to be her winemaking consultant for several years and to have the opportunity to purchase the property that she so dearly loved from her. Anyone who knew Emma knows what a force she was in establishing the Virginia wine industry in the 1980s and '90s. Her grit, determination, and vision helped pave the way for today's successes. I will raise a glass of Shenandoah Riesling tonight in appreciation for all that she accomplished. RIP, Emma."

Emma’s passion, resilience, and vision shaped Virginia winemaking into what it is today, and her legacy will continue to inspire us all.

In her honor, we are offering free tastings of our 2021 Cuvée Emma now through the end of the month at Shenandoah Vineyards. This special wine was crafted as a tribute to Emma’s pioneering spirit and lifelong dedication to winemaking. We invite you to join us in raising a glass to celebrate her enduring legacy.

With gratitude,
Michael Shaps & The Shenandoah Vineyards Team
