Lettuce restock from GreenerGrounds! 🥬 Now let’s have a little lettuce chat: Our lettuce sales have increased nearly tenfold since the cyclospora outbreak was first publicized. And that’s awesome (Except for the horrible parasite part of this story, which is the opposite of awesome.) 🦠 One of two things is happening: Either lettuce in the news has made you think about lettuce and crave lettuce, so you’re buying more lettuce lately and you’re doing it with us. Amazing. 💫 OR perhaps you always buy lettuce but you don’t make an effort to buy it from a local farm until you feel like it’s essential for your health. 🍅 If the second thing seems true, that’s totally understandable. But it’s also not a sustainable way to support a local food system. 🧀 I started working and volunteering for local food initiatives in Oklahoma 20 years ago, and I can count on a few fingers the number of farm or food businesses that have endured across the last 20 years with me. Farms go out of business an alarming rate, and there are several reasons for that, but trust me when I say that almost no one closes up shop when they have a lucrative business. And if it occurs to you that “farming” and “lucrative,” don’t belong in the same sentence, why not? 🍉 Which is all to say that if local lettuce matters to you today, it would be really impactful if it continued to matter to you next month and next year, on an ongoing basis. 🙏 Thank you for coming to my lettuce talk.

Change your Saturday plans for these August babies! 🍑 🍅 These are Cresthaven peaches from Missouri, which we picked up at Livesay Orchard this week. Their crop was taken out by a freeze, so they’ve been sourcing some peaches from other regional orchards. 🌞 The Cherokee Purple tomatoes are from Blooms and Shrooms here in OKC. 🌈

More sweet corn! 🌽 This is from Livesay Orchards in Porter. We’re open 9-6 Saturday in the OKC Farmers Market District and 11-4 Sundays …. Plus every other day of the week from 10-6. 🍅 🥬 🥩 This week we also have a restock on GreenerGrounds lettuce heads, and a recent restock on grass-finished beef from BF-Farms. Plus more tomatoes, watermelon, peppers, summer squash and more.
