A Bigger Reason to Rejoice

Today’s Passage
Psalm 118:20-24

Highlighted Verse
Psalm 118:24

“This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Many of us grew up singing Psalm 118:24 as a song. It’s a catchy tune and a wonderful reminder to be thankful and have a better attitude about the day.

And that’s certainly true. Every day is a gift from God.

But when we read the surrounding verses, we discover the psalmist is rejoicing over something much greater than the arrival of a new day.

As the psalm draws to a close, the focus shifts to God’s salvation and His chosen cornerstone. The stone rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone. What appeared to be rejection was actually God’s plan all along.

Scripture repeatedly applies this verse to Jesus, making it clear that the rejected stone is the Messiah.

The psalmist stands in amazement:

“This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.”

Only then do we arrive at the familiar words:

“This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

The joy of Psalm 118 is not merely that another day has arrived.

The joy is that God has acted.

God has saved.

The rejected stone has become the cornerstone.

That is why the psalmist rejoices.

And that gives us an even greater reason to rejoice today.

Our joy is not ultimately rooted in whether life is easy, our plans work out, or circumstances go our way. Those things can change from one day to the next.

But what God has accomplished through Christ never changes.

Every morning brings new reasons to thank God.

But the greatest reason for our joy never changes.

Christ is still the cornerstone.

The Savior still reigns.

And because His salvation is secure, God’s people always have a reason to rejoice.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of each day, but even more for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank You that the rejected stone became the cornerstone and that Your plan of redemption cannot fail.

Help us to rejoice not merely in our circumstances, but in Christ Himself and the salvation He accomplished for us. Help us to live joyful lives that reflect the hope we have in Him and point others to the goodness of our Savior. Amen.

Rooted Deep

Today’s Passage
Psalm 1:2-3

Highlighted Verse
Psalm 1:3

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

Have you ever wondered why some people remain faithful through seasons that seem like they should have crushed them?

They face loss, disappointment, hardship, and uncertainty just like everyone else. Yet somehow they continue trusting God, walking faithfully, and bearing fruit.

The answer may be found in the picture Psalm 1 gives us:

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water…”

Trees that survive droughts and storms are usually drawing from a source deeper than what is happening above the surface.

In the same way, believers who remain faithful through difficult seasons have often spent years sinking their roots into something deeper than their circumstances—the truth of God’s Word and the unchanging foundation of Christ.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses this image to describe His people. Jeremiah speaks of a tree planted by the waters that does not fear when heat comes because its roots continue drawing from a steady source. The drought may come, but the tree remains.

The lesson is simple: the strength of the tree is not found in itself. It is found in what it is rooted in.

The same is true for us.

In a world filled with competing voices, opinions, and distractions, those who remain grounded in God’s truth are less likely to be carried away by every new idea, fear, or circumstance. Their stability comes from something deeper than what is happening around them.

Years later, Jesus revealed the deeper reality behind this picture when He said:

“I am the vine, you are the branches.”

The secret to a fruitful life is not trying harder or appearing stronger. It is abiding in Christ.

The storms will come. The heat will come. The dry seasons will come.

But those who are rooted in God’s Word and abiding in Christ will find that He is able to sustain them through it all.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, help us sink our roots deeply into Your Word and remain firmly grounded in Christ. When difficult seasons come, remind us that our strength is found in You and not in ourselves. Grow our faith, keep us close to You, and help us bear fruit that brings glory to Your name. Amen.

This mighty tree described was not built in a day.

So stay faithful and keep sending your roots deeper into Christ, one day at a time.

Where the Kingdom Begins

Today’s Passage: Matthew 5:1-12

Highlighted Verse: Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

When many people read the Beatitudes, they see a list of qualities they should try harder to develop. Be humble. Be merciful. Be a peacemaker. While those lessons are certainly found in the passage, Jesus is teaching something much deeper.

The Beatitudes are not a checklist for earning God’s favor. They are a description of what citizens of His kingdom look like. They describe what God’s grace produces in the lives of those who belong to the King.

Jesus begins with a surprising statement:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

To be poor in spirit is to recognize our spiritual bankruptcy before God. It is the realization that we cannot save ourselves, earn God’s favor, or stand before Him based on our own righteousness.

Once we understand our hands are empty, the Beatitudes unfold in a beautiful progression. We see our sin and mourn over it. We humbly submit to God and hunger for righteousness. God’s mercy begins to shape how we treat others. Our hearts are transformed, we pursue peace, and we remain faithful even when the world opposes us.

In many ways, the Beatitudes first describe Jesus Himself. He was perfectly humble before the Father, a man of sorrows, meek, righteous, merciful, pure in heart, the ultimate Peacemaker, and persecuted unto death. Jesus first lived these qualities perfectly, and by His grace He begins to work them into His people.

The Beatitudes remind us that the Christian life does not begin with what we can do for God. It begins with recognizing our need for Him and trusting the One who perfectly lived the life we never could. Jesus first lived these qualities for us, and now, through the work of the Holy Spirit, He is faithfully producing them in His people. As we walk with Him, the Father is conforming us more and more to the image of His Son.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us our need for You. Help us to walk in humility, depend on Your grace, and hunger for the righteousness that is found in Christ alone. Continue shaping our hearts to reflect the character of Jesus in the way we live, love, and serve others. May our lives point people to Him and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
