The solstice has done its magic! Our new hens did not begin laying this fall as hoped, but this morning I found these two small beauties! They are a color not previously seen in our flock so I’m optimistic that the lengthening days will mean our egg bounty is on its way!

We’re wrapping up the hot pepper harvest by fermenting some of our last peppers for hot sauce: habanero, sugar rush peach, cayenne and yellow jalapenos (Numex spice, one of our favorites!) After a rest of about two weeks, we’ll blend them up and spice up winter. 🔥

Food from the farm: This week so far we’ve made strawberry balsamic shrub, strawberry basil shrub, chunky mustard pickles and cucumber slices. We came home from a quick trip to Michigan to find the garden bursting with pickles and cucumbers. There will be many more batches of pickles.🥒

Today, it’s potions from the farm! I made switchel (nature’s Gatorade!) and started a blueberry-lavender shrub. Both begin with an apple cider vinegar base and make delicious and refreshing beverages.
