Bugs, bugs, and more bugs!

Today we took a closer look around the farm and snapped some pictures of the butterflies, bugs, and other little creatures making themselves at home in the garden! From beautiful butterflies to some seriously scary-looking critters, there was plenty to discover.

And don’t let that spooky-looking spider fool you, it’s actually a great sign of a healthy garden! Spiders are helpful garden residents that feed on many insects and play an important role in keeping the ecosystem balanced.

We even spotted a very shy little grasshopper hiding among the plants! It wasn’t quite ready for its close-up and kept scooting around the stem of the flower, but we were still able to snap a picture of our bashful little friend!

Our farm stand is overflowing with flowers and fresh veggies this morning!

And new this morning: sunflower heads! Take one home to roast and snack on, save the seeds for next year, or leave them out for the birds.

We picked a massive one this morning, and it’s waiting for you on the stand! Come grab it while it lasts!

Finley the Farm Dog keeps us entertained all day long, and we truly couldn’t imagine the farm without him!

We will be closing the Welcome Center at 1:00 today so our staff can attend a community event. Our 11:00 tour will be the only tour offered today, but the property will remain open for visitors to explore and enjoy the grounds at their leisure.

Tomorrow, we’ll return to our regular schedule with tours at 11:00 and 1:00.

As cherry season comes to a close in Door County, we thought we’d share a little piece of Horseshoe Bay Farms history: Cherry Camp

From the 1940s through the 1970s, more than 100 boys from Northeast Wisconsin, Chicago, Milwaukee, Fond du Lac, and the Upper Peninsula came to Horseshoe Bay Farms each summer to pick cherries.

The boys stayed at the HSB Clubhouse for two to three weeks, spending their days in the orchards. Their first few pails of cherries helped cover room and board, while everything they picked after that meant a little extra pocket change.

Cherry Camp even had some familiar faces as counselors! Members of the Green Bay Packers served as camp counselors, leading the boys in morning calisthenics before heading out for a day of cherry picking.

Sundays looked a little different. The boys dressed in their Sunday best and were taken to church by Dr. Cowles. Afterward, they were treated to an ice cream cone and spent the rest of the day swimming in the bay.

Cherry Camp is just one of the many stories that make up the history of Horseshoe Bay Farms, and a fun one to remember as another Door County cherry season comes to an end. 🍒
