Today we got a surprise arrival! His mama was supposed to be due the first full week of Oct.

Well we got a call this morning that this little fella had wandered up to the neighbors front door😂 After verifying which mama he belonged to we loaded him up to take him home and are going back to pick her up in just a bit.

Little boy is now settled into the calf pen where he’ll get bottle fed until he’s weaned and ready to go back to the pasture to graze.

It’s that time of year when I keep some type of bone broth going all the time. With kids activities back in full swing, you never know when you might need a batch of chicken noodle soup.

I also make everyone in our house start off our week days with a cup of bone broth to try to make sure everyone is getting all the nourishment and nutrients they need to fend off any illnesses going around.

Ours is simple I save up chicken carcasses and bones until I have about 3 lbs of bones and throw in a couple of chicken feet for a collagen boost, add some veggies, and a tablespoon of apple c***r vinegar and set it for low. And pro tip- you can save your vegetable scraps in a container in your fridge to make them go a little further. Who isn’t trying to stretch a dollar these days?

It's been a busy couple weeks and I haven't found time to post much, but time sure is flying by. We are officially less than 1 month away from getting this batch of chicks into the freezer!

Behind the Scenes Wednesday

No video today, it’s been one of those weeks… but we’re still getting into something important: Rapid Chilling.

Milk leaves the cow at 100 degrees. The perfect temperature for feeding a calf or maybe helping you get to bed. But the biggest problem here is that bacteria also love this temperature. In fact they can multiply rapidly between 40-140 degrees and even double their counts in as little as 20 minutes. 😬

That’s why rapid chilling of raw milk is critical when it comes to producing safe, low risk raw milk. Rapid chilling:
✔️ Stops bacterial growth
✔️ Helps inhibit pathogens
✔️ Improves flavor
✔️ Extends shelf life

Here at the farm we use a 30 gal Milk Plan bulk tank that allows us to chill the milk to 38 degrees within an hour. Right now with our daily production and size of our tank we hit this temperature at about 30 minutes.

This is part of the care that goes into every single jar of milk from Flower Cow Farm. Raw milk will never be a no risk food, but we take care to ensure that we make it as low risk as possible.

BEHIND THE SCENES WEDNESDAY

Last week we showed you our morning walk through. Today, we’re getting to the heart of milk quality: udder health and pre-milking prep.

Meet Biscuit! She just calved on Sunday- so she’s been milked approximately 5 times in this video and she shows it. Her milk isn’t going into the bulk tank yet, but at least I can actually remember to get videos of her. 😂

🧽 Clean the udder. Most days this is a little dry bushing

🧽 Strip teats and check the milk for abnormalities

🧽Dip teats in a food grade iodine solution

🧽Wipe the teats dry

🧽Attach the milking unit

🧽 Post-milking sanitizing and condition spray

Why does this matter to you?

Bacteria counts start at the udder. If we are not meticulous here, no amount of refrigeration can fix it.

Welcome to behind the scene Wednesday series! Every week we’re going to pull back the curtain to show you what happens on the farm to get creamy farm fresh milk and pastured poultry to your table.

This week we’re showing you our daily herd health checks. When we’re walking through the herd we’re not looking for specific diseases or problems. We’re just observing, watching for changes. Cows are creatures of habit, so you can pick up on problems early by just paying attention.

Every morning we’re checking:
-Eyes: are they bright and clear
- Attitude: is she chewing her cud with the group or is she standing alone
-Manure: checking consistency to monitor rumen function
-Body Condition: monitoring their weight for their stage of life and lactation

We spend about 20 minutes in the morning just observing, and it serves as the foundation of our day. Catching a small issue early allows us to ensure that they don’t become a big problem later on.

Producing safe, wholesome raw milk doesn’t just start in the milking parlor. It starts with paying attention.
