Come ask all you blueberry growing questions for free!
We are starting to trim our blueberry plants for the season and it’s a great opportunity to learn.

1,500 strawberry plants are coming to the farm this fall! 🍓

This is also the time of year when I trim all 1,300 of our blueberry bushes. Am I crazy? Yes. But I have big dreams, and I’m working hard to make them happen! 😅

If your dream is to get your hands in the dirt and learn how to care for blueberry bushes and strawberry crowns, you’re in the right place. I’ll be sharing plenty of tips, tricks, successes, and probably a few mistakes along the way.

We’ll also be accepting all the help we can get! If you’d like to volunteer and learn alongside us, let me know. There’s a whole lot of planting, pruning, and growing ahead! 🌱

You guys! I would LOVE to do a pumpkin patch this year, but I missed my planting window and those pumpkins definitely did not get the memo that I have big plans. 😂

So while a pumpkin patch isn’t in the picking cards for this year, I’m already putting the plan together for next year!

Nothing huge or fancy, just a simple, old-fashioned pumpkin patch where you can walk the field, find your favorite, and pick it right off the vine. 🎃

And pumpkins aren’t the only thing coming…

If all goes according to plan, next year we’ll have berries to pick from May through July, then hopefully pumpkins from late September into November.

Will everything go perfectly? Absolutely not. 😂 Farming has a funny way of reminding me that I’m not actually in charge around here.

There are a LOT of things that can go wrong…but there are also a whole lot of things that can go right.

And now that the kids are back in school, I finally have some extra time to pour into the plants we already have, get new areas ready, and keep building this little farm one project at a time.

I’m basically learning as I go, crossing my fingers, planting way too many things, and seeing what happens.

2027 could be a really fun year at Once in a Blue Moon Berries. 🫐🍓🎃

Really though… I’m sometimes way overconfident in what I can do, and how much I can fit into a day. 😂

Thankfully, my husband is always there to cheer me on, help with the kids, and bail me out when I’ve taken on one too many projects.

There’s always something waiting to be built, planted, fixed, or fed out here on the farm, and I have a bad habit of starting 10 projects before finishing one. Then the overwhelm hits, and burnout isn’t far behind.

Almost every morning on his drive to work, I call him with my mile long list of ideas. Patiently, he listens, helps me prioritize, and gently talks me down from trying to do everything at once.

I think it’s the millennial in me. I genuinely don’t know how to sit still. But I’m learning that not every project has to happen today, even if my brain thinks it does.

Please tell me I’m not the only one. Anyone else constantly starting new projects before finishing the last one? 😂

Because apparently I need more projects…

The farm may be closed for the season, but we’re still working around here every single day.

This week’s project: a chicken run.

Those cute little chicks everyone got to meet this season are growing fast and quickly outgrowing their brooder. We plan to let them free-range, but they’ll still need a safe place to sleep and somewhere to stay dry when it rains.

After spending way too many hours researching chicken runs on Amazon, I finally decided… I’m just going to build one myself.

Construction experience: 0.
Determination: 100.
Confidence: Questionable.
YouTube tutorials: About to get a workout.

Wish me luck… and feel free to place your bets on how many trips to the hardware store this project is going to take.

100 new blueberry plants are officially in the ground! 🫐

Now we’re putting up shade cloth to help them adjust not just to their new soil, but to our full California sun.

If you brought home blueberry plants from us this year, this is your reminder to give them a little extra TLC while they get established:
• Water deeply and consistently.
• Give them a little afternoon shade during the hottest part of summer.
• Keep up with fertilizer and sulfur or other acidity amendments.

The first summer is all about helping them settle in. Once they make it through this season, they’ll be much more established and ready to take off next year!

Remember this year is about getting plants established for fruit next year.
