We're forty days into calving season and are currently 85% done. Typically, we're a little farther along than that after two heat cycles, but last year we purchased a group of cows from my parents that didn't start calving until March 15th. We ran the bulls for our regular breeding season which has us calving from February 1st to April 1st, and just asked those gals to keep up. Many of them calved a full two months earlier this year, but we have some that are still coming along.

Mother Nature has given us a taste of everything... negative temps the first week with some snow, a couple big rains, and now temps crowding 80°. Even with the wide variety of weather, calving has gone reasonably well with only a couple that needed a little assistance.

Here's some photos that we've taken along the way.

This past weekend, we had weigh in and tagging for the market steers that will be shown at our county fair in July. Both steers were sired by a Mid-Am Hindsight X Red Revolver bull that we used the last couple years. The baldy steer is out of a purebred Flying B Cut Above cow and weighed in at 1031 lbs. The blaze faced steer is out of a 5/8 SimAngus cow and weighed 1002 lbs.

Thankfully, we only had one newborn yesterday morning when the actual temperature was -3° with a windchill in the negative teens. We had the heaviest springers sorted up into a trap by the barn with a ton of straw, but this heifer still decided to find the edge of where we had fed prairie hay to have him. We didn't want to confuse the first time mama by moving him around too much, so we worked him over with warm towels and put on a pair of Kalf Kozies until he got his feet under himself, then moved them to some deeper straw. Both are doing great and no worse for wear today.

Here's a heifer we're excited to watch grow up. Her dam is a Rains Legacy E24 x SS Nadine cow and she was sired by CCR Cowboy Cut 5048Z. This cow is my favorite cow in the whole herd... 1350 lbs, holds her condition, gentle, cycles back quick every year, and always brings in a nice one at weaning time.

The 2026 calving season just kicked off with an 88 lb bull out of a cow that was in a set of purchased cows. A nice SimAngus calf that should fit right in with the ones we bred.

Even though the weather wasn't the best today, we had extra help home from college, so we got the last of the cows moved home for the winter and freeze branded this year's replacement heifers.
Also, when one of your trucks decides to blow a sensor and go into limp mode the day before a big project, you are extremely grateful for good friends that will change their schedule on short notice and bring another rig to save you some trips.

This set of nine heifers will sell November 13th at Eureka Livestock Sales. Heifers were AI'd to TJ Klondike for February 1st calves, then cleaned up for sixty days by a Hook's Galileo son. They received Triangle 5, Endovac, Scour Bos 9, and Dectomax this weekend. Gentle heifers that have been on a good mineral program all summer and will come to a feed truck.

We took advantage of having the college kids home for the weekend to get some weaning done today.

Our final part of the county fair is the beef carcass contest. The steer that Kyle won reserve grand champion with in the live show ended up in first place of the carcass judging. Luke's steer came in second and a steer that we sold to Chloe placed fourth. Thank you to Walnut Valley Packing for hosting the contest and to Fleming Feed and Grain for sponsoring the awards.

We would like to send out a huge thank you to the folks that bought, bid on, or put down add on money to the boys' steers at the premium auction last night. Kyle's reserve grand champion steer sold to Fleming Feed and Grain with add ons from Loomis Simmentals and Simon Ranch (Mike, Laureen, and Barrett Simon). Luke's steer was purchased by Community National Bank (Jared Haury). Your support of the boys and 4-H is greatly appreciated.

We hosted our annual beef showmanship practice for members of our 4-H club yesterday morning. There were thirteen members with fourteen animals in attendance. We had eight market steers, four breeding heifers, and two bucket calves in the group. Our fair starts this coming Thursday, so this gives the kids a chance to get their animals in a setting that resembles an actual show with extra activity and unfamiliar animals while letting the newer members watch the older kids handle their animals.
