I cannot stress enough the importance of having a good farm dog. 🐕🦺
Our farm dog isn’t perfect. She has her quirks, she gets into things, and she definitely isn’t some perfectly trained livestock guardian dog. 😂 But she DOES do her job.
Unfortunately, when she had her puppies, we brought her inside because they were so little and I wanted to make absolutely sure they were safe and well cared for. And while I completely believe that was the right decision for her and her puppies at the time, I’ve also learned just how much work she was quietly doing outside.
Since she’s been inside, we have now lost NINE chickens to coyotes and hawks.
NINE. 😡
It really opens ones eyes to how much protection a farm dog provides that you sometimes forget or don’t even realize you’re getting. When she’s outside, predators think twice about coming around. There is movement, barking, presence, and a dog who considers this farm her territory.
Having a farm dog isn’t a replacement for good fencing, secure coops, or being responsible with your animals. But there is something to be said for having another set of eyes—and a set of teeth—out there watching over everything.
Our girl may not be perfect, but she has proven to us that she has a purpose here. ❤️
I think sometimes you don’t truly appreciate what something does for your farm until it’s suddenly not there.
Needless to say… we are very ready for Momma to get back to work. 😂🐕🦺🐓🌾
