Thanks AI for transforming my words into a poem.

It’s not just feeding the goats
or scattering for the birds—
it’s a few kernels slipped
to the mice in the shed,
a quiet pile left for deer
who step softly out of dusk.

Don’t forget the squirrels,
the masked patience of raccoons,
the rabbits pausing mid-breath.
Even the unseen are counted—
bobcats, feral cats, coyotes
tracing the night by scent alone.

And maybe beneath the sheds
a skunk or an opossum sleeps,
curled into winter’s hush,
ready to rise at midnight
and find, waiting in the dark,
a kindness meant for all.

Patiently waiting for his share of the goat feed on Wednesday.

Interesting read. Is it accurate? 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

The US show industry has been reaching for extremes in animal conformation for years. It’s not just dairy goats. Let’s review some other breeds/ species that have suffered at the hands of the show world.

🐄 Holstein (Dairy Cattle)

What changed because of show preference:
-Extreme height, sharp angular frames
-Massive udders with shallow attachments

Why producers complain:
-More lameness, mastitis, and shorter productive lives
-Worse fertility and metabolic stability than older utility-type Holsteins
-Many commercial dairies now avoid “show pedigrees”

🐂Hereford (Beef Cattle)

What changed because of show preference:
-Ultra-short legs
-Blocky, extreme muscle

Problems caused:
-Calving difficulty
-Reduced range efficiency
-Lost heat and cold tolerance

🐃Shorthorn (Beef Cattle)

What split the breed:
-Show ring favored giant frame, hair, extreme muscle
-Commercial producers kept moderate utility lines

Result:
-Two genetically different populations under one name
-Show cattle often unworkable in real production systems

🐐Boer Goat

What changed:
-Extreme bulk and mass
-Short legs + heavy bone

Problems:
-Low fertility
-Heat stress
-Structural breakdown
-Poor foraging ability
-Many commercial meat producers actively avoid heavy show genetics.

🐎 American Quarter Horse

Show vs working split:
-Halter-type” horses bred for bulging muscles + tiny feet

Issues:
-Weak hooves and joints
-Poor riding soundness
-Genetic defects like HYPP spread through show lines

🐴Arabian Horse

What changed:
-Ultra-dished faces
-Ballooned foreheads

Health impacts:
-Compromised airways
-Dental and sinus problems
-Reduced athletic stamina vs historical war and endurance type

🐶English Bulldog

Show-driven extremes:
-Faces so short they cannot breathe normally
-Cannot reproduce naturally
-Lifelong respiratory disease

🐕 German Shepherd

Show vs working split:
-Extreme sloped back in show lines

Results:
-Higher rates of hip dysplasia
-Reduced working endurance
-loss in breeds herding ability

🐕‍🦺Pug
-Severe brachycephalic airway syndrome
-Eye prolapse
-Heat intolerance
All primarily driven by appearance standards.

🐑 Suffolk
-Over-muscling from the show side
-Increased lambing difficulty
-Worse maternal instinct

🐏Hampshire Sheep
-Excessive size, reduced pasture efficiency
-Poor longevity in some show lines

🐖 Duroc
-Show breeding prioritized lean growth and muscle
-Reduced mothering ability
-Smaller litters/ lower fertility

Why This Keeps Happening?

Show rings typically reward:
-Bigger
-More extreme
-Faster growing
-Flashier appearance

They do not directly score:
-Longevity
-Fertility
-Structural durability over years
-Pasture efficiency
-Disease resistance
-productivity, particularly towards the breeds intended purpose

The long story short…

Outside the U.S., most livestock industries are built around
🌱Feed efficiency
👴🏼Longevity
🤱🏼Fertility
🌾Pasture performance
❄️Climate resilience

In contrast, American showing is widely seen as emphasizing:
📏Maximum size
🥩Extreme muscling
📐Ultra dairy character
🔎Exaggerated breed traits
🎬Hair, show bloom, and presentation

Foreign breeders often describe U.S. show selections as

“Pretty, but fragile.”

Maybe you've heard there is a Equine HerpesVirus-1 (EHV-1) outbreak at the🐎 World Championship Barrel Racing in Texas.

According to U of Minn, "Equine herpesvirus 1 is a contagious virus that can cause neurological disease, respiratory disease, newborn death and abortion in horses.😢

Alpacas and llamas 🦙are prone to EHV-1. EHV-1 doesn’t affect humans, dogs, cats, sheep, GOATS🐐, cattle, pigs or birds."

There is a EHV that does affect GOATS, but it is Type 9️⃣ not type 1.

Always stay safe and biosecurity aware!
