Well everyone, today we had to process one of our roosters. He went from being gentle to aggressive and after working with him to learn who’s boss, he decided to try to attack while filling the feeder and waterer. He’s now in the freezer and will become soup this winter. Some folks may read this post and think this was a cruel thing to do, but he had a job. To protect the hens and keep them laying eggs throughout the winter. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take a chance of him attacking Evelyn if she was tending to flock duties. This is part of life on a farm. He now serves as a food source.

We are back at making Artisan Sourdough bread. Bacon Castle Supply on Route 10 has agreed to be a pick up hub for our bread for customers who live in Surry on that side and in Smithfield. I will have your bread in a bag with your name on it. Taking orders now for pickups starting next Saturday. Breads that are available are:
Artisan Sourdough Bread $10,
Garlic and Herb Sourdough Bread $15,
Cheddar Sourdough $12,
Cheddar and Jalapeño Sourdough Bread $15
You will need to pay via Venmo or CashApp. Just cooked 3 loaves for customers. Our bread does a 2 day cold ferment in the fridge which makes them even more digestible and better for your gut. We have 5 lbs of figs for sale at the moment. $5 a pound. Just picked tonight. I will be available at the house for you to come and pick up after 5 pm Monday and Tuesday or you can pick up from Tidewater Academy Monday-Wednesday 9-3. We are picking daily between 5-6 lbs daily. Why participate in a CSA(Community Supported Agriculture)? Several reasons:

1. You get to know your LOCAL Farmer and what type of operation they have. (Meat, Produce, Dairy)

2. You know where your food is sourced from. (Your LOCAL Farmer vs. Big Ag contract farms that could be hundreds or thousands of miles away)

3. Economic benefits. (Your dollar usually stays in the locality or state of which you live, your LOCAL Farmer makes a living by providing food sources for their neighbors, sometimes you can barter or trade vs having to spend $$$!)

These are just a few. If you want to REALLY know where your food is coming from, get to know your LOCAL Farmer and be part of a CSA starting today.

We have some yummy sweet pickles (makes the best chicken salad), relish (awesome on hot dogs and brats), pickled okra, spicy pickled okra, strawberry fig jam, applesauce, and honey. These items will be at Bacons Castle Peanut Shop tomorrow (Saturday) from 10-4 pm. Come and see us and check out all the yummy peanuts and goodies that Bacons Castle Shop has to offer.
