The Food & Drug Administration has proposed a rule that would require food companies to give them notice when they intend to avoid safety testing a new ingredient by moving it through a loophole the FDA created known as “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS)

Here’s why you want to watch out for TBHQ on ingredient labels…

⚠️ TBHQ is derived from petroleum and also used in paint & varnish.

⚠️ A 2019 study found TBHQ suppresses the immune system and increases the severity of flu symptoms: “TBHQ suppressed the function of two types of T cells,helper and killer T cells.
Ultimately, this led to more severe symptoms during a subsequent influenza infection.”

⚠️ A prior study found it causes T cells to release a set of proteins that can trigger allergies to foods, such as nuts, milk, eggs, wheat and shellfish.

⚠️ A 2022 study found TBHQ has the ability to damage a cell’s DNA, which can lead to cancer: “TBHQ can have side effects on human health through activation of inflammatory routes...triggering of the gradual development of cancers.”
