Dear Grant County residents, we would like to bring to your attention that if you encounter a calf sleeping near a roadway, please DO NOT remove the animal.
Recently, an individual spotted a calf near a roadway without its mother in sight and took the calf, intending to care for it. However, after contacting an acquaintance who knows us, the individual realized the calf belonged to us and promptly returned it to its original location, where it was reunited with its mother. It is crucial to note that numerous producers in our area practice open calving, which involves mothers temporarily leaving their calves to access water and food. These calves are often left in a specific location, and both the calf and its mother are aware of the designated spot.
We take incidents like this very seriously, given the significant value of these young calves. The calf in question was taken approximately a quarter mile from our farm yard, so if you encounter a calf in distress while driving, please notify the nearest farm. These animals are working livestock, not pets. If you observe a calf in a ditch, it is likely seeking shelter from the wind and awaiting its mother's return.
As there are over 300 cows in this particular herd, we assume that frequent drivers are aware of the presence of livestock. We appreciate the individuals who returned our calf and educated the person on the severity of their actions. We have a zero-tolerance policy for such incidents and closely monitor the surrounding areas for suspicious activity, utilizing remote surveillance.
‼️Any suspicious activity will be reported to the sheriff's office. ‼️
