‘Full Slip’ is when the melon voluntarily releases from the stem. Some melon varieties should be picked at forced slip, some at half slip, and some at full slip.

Then there are the LSL and ESL (long and extended shelf life varieties) that are picked according to the amount of heat units they’ve received.

Did you know...what we Americans think of as cantaloupe is really a muskmelon? Muskmelons are members of the “reticulatus" melon group (meaning heavily netted) and most have a musky perfume when ripe (the exceptions are the LSL melon varieties which are found in supermarkets). True cantaloupe, also known as European cantaloupe, lack the extreme netting and have a much sweeter flavor profile.
