Truffles is available for consideration to another farm.

She’s been a great girl here, but as I continue to make decisions about the direction of our KuneKune program, I think she could be a great addition to someone else’s herd.

She can leave exposed to one of my boars if desired, and I’m happy to discuss breeding options with the right home.

I’ll also be making a trip east in early November, so she may be able to tag along for transport depending on location.

If you’ve been looking to add a mature KuneKune sow to your program, feel free to reach out and we can chat about Truffles, her pedigree, and whether she might be a good fit for your farm

Today is and will always be a heavy day on the farm. If you've lived it, you know.

Harvest day.

You spend a year with these animals, feeding them, loving them, and watching them grow. I know their favorite treats, their favorite spots to sunbathe, and who curls up next to who at night. These are lives I was responsible for from beginning to end.

Then comes the day you load them on the trailer, and suddenly the pastures are a little quieter.

I think it should be a heavy day. That heaviness serves as a reminder of just how much went into the food that will eventually be on our table. The time, the care, the work....and most importantly, the lives behind it.

So today, even through the heaviness, I try to feel grateful.

Grateful for the lives they lived.
Grateful for the food they will provide.
And grateful that we get to know the story behind the food on our table.

This is the part of farm-to-table that isn't quite as pretty but it's just as important.

Ham hocks in the crock pot today for ham and potato soup!!

Ham hocks are a cut probably most people are unfamiliar with. This part comes from the pigs hocks which right above their shin...basically the lower portion of the ham cuts. It's not something you really see sold at the store. Its a cut you can get back when you're getting a whole pig processed. It's not the MOST desirable cut..its smaller size, but it's still useful meat.

And I can't stand the thought of wasting part of an animal I raised. So we ask for the hocks and shanks back, for the fat back, and for the neck bones back. It all has a purpose and we are intentional about using it all.

Ham hocks actually cook extremely well in the crockpot in my opinion!

These two steers live their best life our here on these pastures... they've got green grass, sunshine on their backs, and plenty of room to just be cattle.

I love to watch cows just be cows, (and sometimes I even envy them a bit) never knowing much of a worry in the world.

This is farm-to-table to me.

Knowing where your food comes from, knowing the pasture it was raised on, what it ate, and how it was cared for. And knowing that the animal behind the food on your table was given a good life.

I recently read a quote from Wendell Berry... "I dislike the thought that some animal has been made miserable to feed me. If I am going to eat meat, I want it to be from an animal that has lived a pleasant, uncrowded life outdoors, on bountiful pasture, with good water nearby and trees for shade.”

We can respect the animal, give it the best life we can, and still recognize its purpose.

A good life. A simple life. And someday, good food raised with intention.

P.S. Beautiful animals can still be useful animals 🥩
