Nylah enjoyed a cool evening tonight.... I'm getting really excited to get one of our own homegrown heifers bred. She's turning 2 this month and has a date with some straws in December.

We buy our hog feed in bulk - 2000 pounds at a time in fact. We don't have a grain trailer so we get these huge totes and have them loaded into the livestock trailer. Our tractor doesn't lift 2000 pounds so we unload by the buckets into 50 gallon drums to keep the feed safe from mice.

Is it what we love doing? No. But there's cost savings to it... there are thin margins in farming so every little bit saved helps.
Do we hope to one day have a grain trailer? Yes. But for now, this isn't the worst thing.

I used to dream about having a piece of land with horses. The goal started with horse property... I never imagined that dream would eventually turn into cows and pigs, early mornings, or a never-ending list of things that need to be done.

But somewhere along the way, it all just felt so right. I'm a believer in "everything happening for a reason" and all these twists and turns and road bumps have led us to exactly where we're supposed to be.

We have a date for pork!

I will have pork, by the cut, for sale early October. I will likely do some bundle deals too

Our pork is raised with the care, respect, and good life from day one.

These pigs have been:

One of the reasons farming matters so much to me is because I want to know where my food comes from. I want to know the person who raised it. I want to know what those animals ate, how they lived, and how they were treated. And I want other people to have the opportunity to know those things too.

Farming is about the land, the animals, and the connection between those two things.

It's watching the seasons change and paying attention to the rain. It's learning what the ground can give and what it needs back. It's raising animals that belong here and trying to make thoughtful decisions about what we breed and what we preserve.

It's about building something that has a purpose beyond us.

I don't know if we'll ever own hundreds of acres, as much as I would love to. I don't know exactly what this farm will look like ten or twenty years from now. Hell, some days I don't even know what it's going to look like next year.

But I know I want to be one of the people who is still trying to farm.

Trying to keep land in agriculture.
Trying to raise good food.
Trying to support other small farms.
Trying to preserve the breeds, the knowledge, and the traditions that are so easy to lose.
Trying to leave a little something behind that is better than we found it.

I caught Delilah friend cheating on Pippi this morning. I guess she's trading out for the other Coconut granddaughter - Dosido!
