Summer is haymaking season.
Most years we can harvest 3 crops from our 120 acres of alfalfa/grass hay.
When alfalfa starts to bloom, protein levels in the plants are at the highest feed value, and we look for a 2- to 3-day dry period in the weather to begin cutting 20 – 40 acres.
Within two days, hay is dry enough to rake and bale.
Bales are moved from field to storage areas as soon as possible to avoid running over regrowth.
Hay is fed when pastures go dormant, usually around late November through March.
If weather is dry in late summer or early fall, we may need to supplement pastures when regrowth is slow.
During winter, four to six 1,300 lb. bales will be fed per day to feed approximately 150 beef animals.
