Meet the Staff: David Shonkwiler — Still Builder & Fabricator

If you’ve seen one of our handcrafted moonshine stills, there’s a pretty good chance David Shonkwiler had a hand in building it.

At 58, David brings a lifetime of experience—and more than a few stories—to the shop. A retired career United States Air Force veteran, David served from 1986 to 2008, completing more than two decades of military service. His career and travels took him across more of the world than most people will ever see. From Germany, Belgium and Holland to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, Turkey and Africa, along with time in Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua, David has lived and worked in places all across the globe, including numerous active war zones.

With a background as a heavy equipment mechanic, David has spent much of his life working with his hands and figuring out how things work. These days, he puts that experience to use fabricating and building many of the handcrafted copper moonshine stills that come out of our shop.

Away from the copper, David is a serious classic car enthusiast and musician. He’s also a proud Air Force dad, with his son continuing the family tradition of service and currently stationed in Hawaii.

And then there’s David himself. Around here, he’s every bit as well known for his personality as he is for his craftsmanship. He’s a character in the best possible way, always good for a story, a joke, or something completely unexpected—and there’s rarely a dull moment when he’s around.

From Air Force bases and war zones around the world to heavy equipment, classic cars, music, and handcrafted copper stills, David has collected a lifetime of experiences—and somehow ended up here building moonshine stills with us.

We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Meet the Team: Chris — Construction, Fabrication & Development

Chris originally came on board helping with construction and renovations around the distillery, but his role quickly grew into a little bit of everything. Today, he helps build our copper moonshine stills, operates CNC equipment and laser engravers, and works on various construction and expansion projects as Flaming Aces continues to grow.

With a college degree in Industrial Design Technology Engineering, Chris brings a mix of hands-on fabrication, construction knowledge, design, and problem-solving to the team. Beyond building things, he also contributes to the ideas, designs, and overall vision behind future projects and the continued growth of the distillery and its business.

Outside of the distillery, Chris is a seventh-generation cattle farmer, carrying on a family tradition rooted right here in East Tennessee. Whether he’s working with copper, running a machine, building out the next expansion, or working cattle, he’s most at home turning ideas into something real.

Hi everyone! 👋🏼🥃

We’re excited to introduce the newest member of the Flaming Aces Distillery family, Bree!

Bree is a born and raised Elizabethton girl, so having her back home and behind the bar with us is pretty special. In her early 20s, she traveled all over the country, working in the service industry and bartending while honing her craft and learning what makes a great drink and an even better experience.

When she’s not behind the bar, you can usually find her somewhere outside. She loves hiking, chasing waterfalls, and making questionable decisions involving jumping into them! Her dog Biscuit and her daughter Marceline are usually right there with her for the adventure.

She’s also a lifelong reader with a collection of more than 500 books, loves to sing, and apparently has been making people laugh and causing a little trouble since day one. In fact, Breanne earned her very first frowny face on her first day of kindergarten for starting a food fight in the cafeteria. So we’re pretty sure the personality you’ll meet behind the bar has been thoroughly tested over the years. 😂

What Bree is most excited about at Flaming Aces is the creativity behind the bar. With hundreds of flavors and countless combinations of ingredients and elements to work with, she’s looking forward to creating cocktails you won’t find anywhere else and putting her own spin on the Flaming Aces experience.

Most importantly, Bree is excited to be part of a place that feels like family. We’re excited to have her here, and we know she’ll bring plenty of personality, creativity, and probably a little chaos to the bar.

🔥 MEET THE FLAMING ACES TEAM MADDIE! 🔥

If you’ve spent much time at Flaming Aces, chances are you already know Maddie and if you don’t, you’re missing out.

In our opinion, Maddie is one of the best bartenders in the Tri-Cities. But what makes her so special to us goes way beyond how well she can make a drink.

Maddie has become family and an incredibly important part of the Flaming Aces team. She’s goofy, outgoing, never meets a stranger, and has a way of making people feel welcome the minute they walk through the door. She doesn’t just serve drinks she talks with people, listens to their stories, shares plenty of laughs, and helps create the kind of atmosphere we’ve always wanted Flaming Aces to have.

And trust us… if Maddie is behind the bar, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to hear some laughing. 😂🍹

Outside of Flaming Aces, Maddie loves dogs, horses, traveling, and pretty much anything outdoors. 🐶🐴🌲✈️ She’s also going to school to become a Veterinary Technician, combining her love for animals with a career helping care for them.

We’re incredibly proud of her, grateful to have her on our team, and even more grateful that somewhere along the way she became part of our family.

Meet the Staff: Owen

Distillery & Guest Experience Crew

If you’ve spent some time at Flaming Aces Distillery, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Owen doing a little bit of everything.

Owen helps out wherever he’s needed, whether that means working behind the bar as a bartender or barback, keeping things clean and organized, or helping with some of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the distillery running smoothly.

He also helps create images and content for Flaming Aces’ marketing and social media. When guests want to learn a little more about what we do, Owen gives tours of our copper still and guides tastings of our various spirits, sharing a little about how they’re made along the way.

There isn’t really one job title that covers everything Owen does—and that suits him just fine. He’s simply happy to be part of the crew and help out wherever he can.
