🤗 finally got us a trailer big enough for antlers & headed to our first drop.
Thank you Southern Plains Elk for all the help getting our operation off the ground. Your genetics are incredible & we are so grateful to be working with you! Can’t wait to see the calves next June 🤩!

How about some random elk facts.

Elk cows are known for their strong maternal instincts. After giving birth, they will often form small groups called "cow-calf groups" with other mothers and their calves. These groups provide safety in numbers as they can help defend against predators. Additionally, elk cows are typically very attentive to their calves, teaching them vital survival skills, such as foraging for food and recognizing dangers in their environment. This nurturing behavior is essential for the calves' development.

It’s that fun week (hopefully only the one!) here in OK that we get to brave the freezing cold & wind. Thankfully I have many wardrobe options thanks to George King😝.

The girls don’t seem to mind it at all. Had their meal & back into the trees they went.

Elk are nosey 🙄. We just pulled porcupine quills again this year. Called in Nick & Caroline from Shen Animal Health mobile vet. Definitely not a solo job. (If you need someone to come to you - I can’t say enough good things about these 2!)

Also, got to touch velvet antlers for the first time. It didn’t disappoint. So very cool!
I broke the squeeze chute to start the day off right. Shout out to George😘 for trying to talk me through the repairs … and tears of frustration… & calling help 🫣 . thanksJason for responding to the “bat signal” 😂.
