As you celebrate Independence Day, please take a moment to remember the police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, public works crews, and other first responders working to keep our community safe. Celebrate responsibly, leave the illegal fireworks at home, and help make this a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July for everyone. 🇺🇸
While thousands of families gather at the Red, White & Blue Celebration at Elk Grove Park, where 15,000 to 20,000+ attendees are expected, a significant number of our officers and staff will be dedicated to keeping that event safe from start to finish.
At the same time, our patrol teams will be spread throughout the city responding to everything that traditionally comes with one of our busiest nights of the year: traffic collisions, DUI investigations, domestic violence calls, mental health crises, and other emergency calls for service.
To put the night into perspective, last year between 6:00 PM and midnight alone, our Dispatch Center handled 356 emergency 9-1-1 calls and another 206 non-emergency calls.
In addition, we will once again be working closely with Code Enforcement to address illegal fireworks activity across the city. Also again this year, we will also be utilizing our Drone as First Responder (DFR) program to help identify those responsible for illegal fireworks violations. If you choose to take that risk, understand that enforcement does not always happen in the moment. Citations may follow in the days or weeks after the holiday.
A reminder: Illegal fireworks carry a $1,000 fine per firework. Last year, 41 citations were issued totaling over $300,000.
To report illegal fireworks, please call our non-emergency line at (916) 714-5115.
We ask for your patience and understanding on July 4th. Call volumes are extremely high, and while our teams will be working around the clock, response times may be delayed due to the sheer number of incidents happening simultaneously across the city.
Please celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and help us make it a safe 4th for everyone in Elk Grove.
