This past spring I have been learning to milk our sheep. I have saved the milk, froze it and have already made some soap from it. Since we weaned our lambs a few weeks ago, I have been milking the ewes once every morning and getting at least a couple of quarts of milk. I am now on the adventure to learn to make all kinds of things using the milk.
I have been interested in the dairy aspect of sheep for a couple of years - I even tried milking a couple of the ewes last year but it wasn't very successful and so I was quick to stop. This year has been different. I have to credit the book "The Guide to Homestead Dairy Sheep" by Rachel Hester that has really helped me. I listen to Rachel's podcast, "The Wooly Whey" and she interviews other people who are using the milk from their sheep.
As I continue on this adventure, I will share what I am learning (the successes and the failures -hopefully not too many!)

A surprise! This ewe wasn't even supposed to have a lamb and she showed up with one this afternoon. Mom and lamb are doing great!

It definitely feels like spring here! Apple, pear and flowering crab blossoms are out. Such a hopeful time of year.
