Encountering bears is typically people's greatest fear. It just so happens that encountering people is more dangerous for people and bear. Most of the time, bear know about the danger of proximity to humans. I help keep things that way by keeping my food inaccessible to bears while backpacking.

A recent two-day hike with Hondo and Conagher was healing after loosing our lead pack goat, Shalako, at the end of August.

Losing Shalako over the weekend was especially hard. When you've been over as many trail miles as we have together you develop a bond that is different than another livestock animal in your pasture. They are a companion on a dark windy night on a remote mountain or under an overhang in the rain. You trained them for entering a hauler for transportation and got the used to standing still while you adjusted their pack saddle harness. Shalako is immediately behind me in this photo at the Linville River. Many more memories to be shared of our experiences together.

He was a remarkable goat and will not be forgotten. This past week we spent the evenings walking slowly through the woods or along the driveway and fields while he was trying to recover. His last afternoon we spent under a sun shade with his head on my lap. It was a tough goodbye because of all the trail miles we have put on over the last few years. When you are hiking together you really bond and we were very close. Shalako was a very remarkable goat!

Shalako is still with us, much to our surprise. We don't know yet if he will pull through. We're taking it a day at a time.

Shalako is not doing well Thursday following surgery Wednesday. Apart from a miracle he won't be with us much longer. 🙏🏼😭🙏🏼

Shalako is showing signs of recovery after being very sick for almost a week. The vet visit revealed a UTI that we had missed because he hadn't been running a fever and wasn't blocked. We only use this chain link fence area as a temporary holding area for obvious reasons.🤠
