For the Anderson family, the Ellensburg Rodeo has never just been a rodeo. It is part of our family story.

More than 100 years ago, Clarence Anderson used his draft horses to help clear the grounds that would become home to the Ellensburg Rodeo. Generations of the Anderson family have been a part of this rodeo ever since, as competitors, volunteers, supporters and members of this community we are proud to call home.

So when the Ellensburg Rodeo took a moment during the opening of this year’s rodeo to recognize Ron Anderson, it was a pretty special moment for our family and everyone at Anderson Hay.

Ron helped build Anderson Hay from its roots right here in Ellensburg into the company it is today, but no matter how far the business grew, Ellensburg was always home. Family, agriculture, relationships and this community were at the heart of what he built and the legacy he left behind.

There are certain moments that remind you where you came from, who helped get you there, and whose shoulders you are standing on. Watching Ron be honored in that arena was one of those moments.

Thank you to the Ellensburg Rodeo for recognizing Ron and for a relationship with the Anderson family that now stretches back more than a century. We are incredibly proud of his legacy, proud of our family’s history with this rodeo, and proud to call Ellensburg home.

Here’s to Ron, to the generations who came before us, and to carrying that legacy forward for the generations still to come.

Maybe not lazy, but it might be giving them fewer reasons to move.

Slow feeders can be a great tool for stretching out forage time and helping horses eat more like they would when grazing. But there is another side to the equation. If all of the hay is in one spot, horses may spend more time standing at the feeder and less time moving around their turnout area.

Pasture naturally gives horses a reason to take a few bites, walk a little farther, forage some more, head toward water, and keep moving throughout the day. When pasture is not an option, how we place forage, water, shelter, and feeding areas can help bring some of that movement back into a dry lot or paddock.

One bale is soft and leafy, while the next is coarse and stemmy. Some natural variation in hay is expected, but when your forage changes significantly from bale to bale, your horse's diet can change right along with it.

Consistency matters, especially when hay makes up the majority of what your horse eats each day. Big changes in maturity, leafiness, fiber and nutrient content can make maintaining a consistent feeding program more difficult.

This is why the extra work matters. Testing, tracking and traceability take more time and investment, but knowing customers like Lori can feed the horses they love with confidence makes every bit of it worth it!

And a huge thank you to Liz and the Hay USA crew! If you're around Weatherford, Texas, or really anywhere in Texas, give Liz a call. She and her team will get you hooked up and your barn loaded for winter.

And who knows, you might even leave with one of Liz's famous customer-of-the-day pies. Sometimes you get one because you're the customer of the day, sometimes because she just likes you... and if she doesn't, you might get the pie in the face instead.
