Ellensburg Bee Co. at the Ellensburg Farmers Market!

After so many requests, we have finally arrived in collaboration with Green Bow Farm! Head on down to Green Bow’s booth for their amazing selection of pasture raised meat and eggs, while you’re there pick up a bottle of local honey from hives that never leave the Kittitas Valley. 🐝🍯

Hives buzzing with activity today bringing in tons of polle kickstarting brood rearing and beekeeping season. All of this pollen is protein for the new baby worker bees that will make the first summer honey. Love the sound of a busy hive!

Infrared (IR) hive check! A great way to do a nonintrusive hive inspection in the winter. Red is hottest and you can clearly see the heat emitted by the egg shaped cluster of bees through the wood of the beehive. More heat is emitted through the thin parts of the boxes where the handles are cut out and through the exit hole on the top sugar box where warm air is exiting the hive. The bee cluster is just below its stored honey so the higher the cluster the less honey they have left. Some are nearly up into their sugar boxes already which is their emergency food source for the winter. Will need to keep checking on those to ensure they have enough sugar to last them until spring.

In the second pic with the line of hives you can see scratch marks on bottom near the entrance to the second hive from the left from our neighborhood skunk that has been indulging in some tasty bee treats at night. Skunks scratch on the hive at night, a bee walks out to investigate, the skunk rolls/smashes the bee with its paw and repeats until its belly is full of tasty bees. Essentially a bee vending machine depriving the hive of workers needed to heat the bee cluster during this critical time. Less bees means less heat produced which then decreases hive survival chances in the winter.

Busy new queen raising our summer bees that will be bringing in this year’s honey crop! She is moving across what looks like a frame of empty cells, but if you pause and zoom in you can see where she carefully laid an egg on the bottom of each cell (they look like tiny grains of rice). In just a short 21 days each one of those tiny little eggs will emerge from the cell as a fully developed worker bee!

Despite the cold blast this weekend, these busy ladies were out gathering as much pollen and nectar they could between squalls. Loads of yellow and orange pollen coming in! Great to hear the buzzing of bees (sound on) in the beeyard again after a long winter.
