SIGNS
As a new struggling entrepreneur, and a person who’s generally motivated by validation, I need periodic signs that I’m doing something right… because I often feel I’m doing everything wrong.
Today I had the opportunity to attend a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing led by U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, as a VIP Guest of one of the panel experts who is a mom-friend of mine. This hearing was completely unrelated to farming. I just wanted to support my friend.
After the hearing, as I stood in the small crowd of invitees quietly talking to the friend who invited me, someone came up to me and said, “I know you! You’re the lawyer who’s now a commercial pig farmer!”
A few people standing nearby overheard. Then I met the Mayor of City of Decatur. As I shook the Mayor’s hand, her colleague - who’s overheard that first interaction - said to her, “She’s a pig farmer!”
As I was walking out of the room, I said goodbye to the Mayor and overheard the Mayor say to one of the city commissioners, “She’s a pig farmer!”
Then, as I was standing outside the room talking to another one of the panelists, I met one of the young women who attended as one of her guests. This woman was her childhood best friend, and she looked familiar to me. I said, “Do we know each other? Where do you work?” She said, “Yes, I think so! I’m a lawyer.” I said, “Oh, okay, I’m also a lawyer. Or… I was. Now I’m a pig farmer.”
The young woman said, “Oh, yes! I know you! I follow you on social media!”
This isn’t the first time I’ve been recognized by strangers as a pig farmer. I hope it isn’t the last. This familiarity and recognition is how small businesses grow - and survive. I want to thank everyone who follows Kristin Aquino-Pham: Livestock Farmer and or on IG; shares my journey with others; and believes in my dream. I couldn’t do this without you.
