Growth & changes

Started out with the love of silkies and hatching chicks! Of course I couldn’t keep them all - even though I wished I could. Silkies led to frizzles and sizzles, of course. I always kept good quality stock. I’ve never done any chicken shows but I know some of the babies would grow up as show quality. Mostly I hatch for the joy of it, so of course many are pet quality. I do make sure they have the right number of toes and are healthy in all respects.

RD Hatchery was born out of the love of hatching and watching chicks go to good new homes. The smiles on people’s faces as they choose silkie chicks is heartwarming.

Hatching was put on hold after a family illness took all of my time for 2 years. I kept chickens but didn’t hatch any except a few that the broody hens chose to hatch themselves.

In the middle of taking care of family the farm moved. Not far, same zip code. Building new coops and pens took a while and couldn’t have been done without the help of my son. This work still had hatching on hold.
