Big Medicine Ranch is located southwest of Ellsworth, MI towards Torch Lake. On the north-east corner of Farrell Road, tucked behind tall Brewers spruce and shade trees and readily noticeable by our century old white barn and silo. like to eat. We like to eat all the time, and grew tired of chemical laden, flavorless offerings from the larger grocery chains***. So, started growing our own produce organically several years ago and things grew from there. Had good early success with some fits and starts but kept trying new plants and new varieties to provide for our own sustenance year round. Our overabundance of productive heirloom tomatoes led to our first farm market where our San Marzanos, Cherokee Purples, Brandywines, and German Johnsons were well received. Surprisingly, our gourmet garlic bulbs were also in high demand….. So, we’ve kept growing and expanding on these early trials, and now grow several varieties of heirloom vegetables especially tomatoes, garlic, peas, beans, lettuces, spinach, fingerling potatoes, summer squash, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, beets, carrots, herbs, and edible flowers. With the addition of our greenhouse, are starting plants earlier and growing later into the autumn season. Growing Practices:
We have been following organic practices since our earliest days at Big Medicine Ranch, including crop rotation, green cover crops/manures, companion planting, low till methods were feasible. And only use those soil amendments approved for organic use including compost, lime, greensand. Fresh Roasted Single Origin Coffees:
We now offer whole bean and freshly ground roasted coffees, available at our Boyne City market tent and from our farm – samples available…..We roast once or twice a week and use only Single Origin coffee beans from Fair Trade Organic farms or those that surpass that criteria. Currently, we offer a dark roast Peruvian and our medium roast is Guatamala Café Feminino. After some trial and error, we now offer Decaffeinated coffee, our current roast is also from Peru and Swiss water processed. Coming soon: Single Origin coffees from Costa Rica, Mexico, Bali and Indonesia and a Single Tree from Africa. AVAILABILITY: Our heirloom produce, fresh roasted coffee, gourmet garlics, salts and herbs and flowers can be found at the Boyne City market and from our farm on Farrell Road. We hope to provide the freshest best tasting produce, garlic, herbs and coffees; all picked, prepared and presented at peek flavor….for your next barbecue, healing homemade soup, salad or snacking.
