Bed prep... It's my least favorite farm task every spring, but this spring has been extra hard because we have 8 new growing beds in the new greenhouse to prepare. 💪 Half of them started out as super compacted dirt and sand after scraping away top soil to level the land, so now we're adding all the good stuff back in to create quality, living soil. That means digging deep and mixing in tons of compost by hand. It has taken a lot of time and energy, but we're getting there, and our tomatoes 🍅, peppers🌶, eggplants 🍆, and cucumbers 🥒 are in and growing!

We're still working on planting our summer crops (spring sure is a lot of work!), but the harvests are already rolling in! Hope everyone is enjoying their beautiful fresh cabbage and broccoli this long weekend. 🤩 What are your favorite cabbage recipes? I need some new ideas!

Many thanks to Community Farm Land Trust for featuring us as a farmer spotlight in this year's Fresh From the Farm Guide! They do great work helping to preserve farmland around the south sound, including publishing this beautiful resource of local farms and farmers markets every spring. You can find hard copies of the full guide all around town.

We're starting our seasonal produce add-on season now with our first spring crops, so it's a great time to sign up for microgreens deliveries if you're not yet on our list. You can check it out at www.graysgreensfarm.com/microgreens. Thanks for supporting local farms! 💚

Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, cabbage… they may look totally different on your plate, but they’re actually all variations of the same plant. Wild, right?

Over generations, farmers selected for different traits—bigger flower heads (broccoli), tighter clusters (cauliflower), leafy greens (kale and collards), lateral buds (brussels sprouts), stem (kohlrabi) or dense heads (cabbage).

Anyway, we got our second planting happily in the ground outside, and our first planting in the greenhouse is absolutely thriving. 💚

No tortillas? No problem! For lunch yesterday, we had collard green wraps loaded with microgreens, scrambled "egg", and tahini. And for dinner tonight, we're loading them up with black bean and sweet potato stew, rice, salsa and of course more microgreens! We've got Collard Greens so sweet and tender, you won't even miss the carbs. Add in a handful of microgreens and you're basically eating a salad with no effort at all.

Spring cleaning is in full swing! We're clearing out the remnants of last season—cutting down the rest of the dead tomato plants, pulling the overwintered lettuce that has become too bitter to eat, and turning it all into next year's compost to nourish new growth. This is how we keep things moving forward.
Out with the old, in with the new… beans are up next in the little hoop houses 💚

If you're not on our lettuce list yet, you are missing out! I've been picking lots of salads 🥗 to taste test and these leaves are the perfect combination of crisp and tender. This is lettuce mix at its best, with vibrant colors and flavors you just can’t find at the store. 🥬 Now I can't wait for tomato 🍅 and cucumber 🥒 season!

This might look like a field of weeds but it is, in fact, intentional. Our winter rye and hairy vetch cover crops are hard at work. The rye anchors the soil and adds organic matter, while the hairy vetch partners with nature to fix nitrogen, giving us a natural boost for this season's growth without relying on synthetic fertilizers. Keeping living roots in the ground over winter also helps protect and rebuild our soil—improving structure, reducing erosion, and feeding the microbial life that makes healthy crops possible. It's apparent just from the number of earthworms I uncover every time I dig into this "weedy" soil compared to a spot that's been bare.

Healthy soil doesn’t happen by accident. It’s grown, season by season. 🌾💚

Lettuce mix is the number one thing people ask me about alllll winter, so I'm excited to share that our first batch of the season is just about ready to go! 🥬 If you already have a lettuce mix add-on subscription from last year, we'll be resuming your lettuce mix deliveries this weekend. Happy almost-spring! 🌱 I'm loving these longer days and being able to work outside until 7pm again! The new greenhouse still needs it's second layer of covering (if the weather ever cooperates) and some electrical and plumbing work, but it's done enough to plant in, and it sure has been nice to be able to keep working in the warmth while it's pouring rain outside. ☔️
