Autumn Olive is in full bloom, and the bees are taking full advantage of the warm, sunny weather, quickly filling honey supers with a nice, light amber-colored nectar.

These are the very reasons we leave our lawn “unkempt” as some may say and we ask you to consider doing the same! Pollinators small and large rely on the early forage to sustain not only themselves but also us. Without these early sources there would not be enough pollinators to pollinate our fruit, berries, squash etc.

The girls are looking good heading into this upcoming snow/cold snap. This hive received another round of emergency sugar as they had eaten through the first round. The sugar serves dual purpose as an emergency feed source should they run out of honey before spring nectar flows begin and as a moisture absorbent. Honey bees will start flying when the temperatures are roughly 50 or above. During the winter, temperatures like these are a good opportunity for us beekeepers to check their food stores and give them supplemental/emergency food if needed. The girls always like to hang out on us as we go through the hives. 😊🐝

Occasionally, individuals inquire about our methods for determining whether our beehives remain active during the coldest days of the year when there is no visible activity. One of the tools in our arsenal is an infrared camera, as seen here with our neighbor's cat and two of our hives. The red clusters on the hives indicate the locations of the clusters, which inform us that they are still thriving.
