My mom is the kid in the middle.

There came a day in January 1945 when my grandfather could not take one more minute in (East) Germany. He and Grandma, and their 5 girls walked nearly 500 miles to Hamburg, (West) Germany with the clothes on their backs. They gave up their house, and everything inside for a chance at a better, safer life. The family pulled Grampa in a wagon as he was injured in WW1. They were refugees. One by one, as money allowed, they emigrated to the US.
