Numbers are dwindling. Lots of nice boys and girls left yet.
Let me tell you about my herd…
My focus has been on production with good conformation, and good temperament.
Temperament is always the first thing to get a goat booted, and I won’t tolerate an escape artist. I require my herd to be easy to handle, polite, and walk on leash as I am taller. Life can be complicated, so good mothering ability is a must, even if I chose to bottle raise. My boys must not be jerks to bucklings or people. And be polite gentlemen even in rut. A bit strong, sure. Unmanageable to hand breed? Nope. I expect gentlemen.
Next, my ladies gotta be able to milk. I want them to put it in the pail. I milk test when life isn’t busy happening like the past couple years. I want my girls to be able to feed the kids they birth with some milk leftover to share. I’ve carefully curated my herd to do just this, and they do not disappoint. Once on test, I expect my girls to be at or above the 70th percentile. And yes, I have Elite genetics. My Elite girls will be staying with me as they’re pretty special to us beyond their award status. While I’ve not pursued extended lactations, my girls aren’t particularly easy to dry off. Their will to milk has been very strong.
Conformation- beyond milk and temperament, I expect my herd to be able to carry their udders well and look good doing it. I don’t show for personal reasons, but many goats I’ve produced have gone to successful show homes. I expect my girls to carry their udder, carry themselves, and not break down after a few years. Our Linear appraisal happened when my herd was 2 weeks fresh, or fresher. Please keep that in mind when looking them over. No woman leaves the hospital after giving birth looking like a million bucks. Yet, we went ahead with the opportunity to gather data when given the chance.
I should be getting pictures tomorrow when extra hands are available. I’ll post individuals as we go along.
Anyone left could possibly catch the bus with Wanderlust Transportation around 8/15. Whitney will be here picking up then. Feel free to reach out to her if someone catches your eye. And feel free to pm me with questions.
