This is the kind of post you don’t usually see—the hard side of farm life, or of owning any animals… sometimes you have to blame yourself when things go bad.

We’ve had some pigs getting loose lately. When we’re home, we can get them back in, but we can’t watch them every minute. We spent a couple of days fixing and reinforcing the fence, making it nice and sturdy, and somehow one still found a way out, as animals will do. Today, when that one got out it got too close to the rd and was hit and killed by a truck.

I’m incredibly thankful to be close friends with our butcher, Steve. When I called him, he said, “I’m right around the corner. I’ll come pick your pig up.” Instead of having to bury him, we’ll be able to honor his life by feeding our family. That means a lot on a day like today.

Castration day with Laura! 🐷 Not everyone agrees with it, but it’s a routine part of raising pigs here—for preventing unwanted breeding, reducing the risk of boar taint in meat, and preparing boys headed to pet homes. Farm chores are always better with a friend! 💛
