🐑 Wensleydale Wether Fleece – Apollo 🐑

Two year old Apollo has appointed himself Head of Quality Control for the sanctuary. No activity is too small to escape his notice. Feeding time? Apollo supervises. Fence repairs? Apollo supervises. A sheep sneezes three pastures away? Apollo is already on site conducting a full investigation. He is endlessly curious, permanently involved in everyone else’s business, and absolutely convinced that the sanctuary could not function without his expert oversight.

🧶 About the Fleece

This fleece has a lovely soft hand along with the silky luster Wensleydales are famous for. Once scoured, it will reveal beautiful shine, excellent drape, and fiber that is a pleasure to spin, blend, and create with. It is a hardworking fleece from a hardworking young man.

🖍️ Color

Apollo’s fleece is predominantly black with the occasional silver strand scattered throughout. The sun kissed tips remain a rich chocolate rather than fading to a lighter brown.

Unfortunately, my camera remains committed to a life of deception. The photos and video consistently overexpose the fleece, making the sun tipped areas appear much lighter and exaggerating the contrast. Images where the fleece appears closest to black are the most accurate representation of its true color. Once spun, expect a beautifully deep chocolate brown or soft black yarn with wonderful depth and richness.

🐑 Clun Forest Ewe Fleece - Spice 🐑

Spice lives with our dear friend and her flock mates, a delightful flock of Clun Forest ewes not far away. In an incredibly generous gesture, their shepherd donated 12 beautiful Clun Forest fleeces to help support the sanctuary.

Because high quality Clun Forest fleeces can be difficult to find, if you’ve been hoping to add one to your stash, feel free to send me a PM. I’d be happy to share weights, photos, and details of the other fleeces before they are listed individually.

🧶 About the Fleece

This fleece is a lofty, bouncy cloud of heaven. Very clean with some dusty tips and scant VM. The luster is surprising for this breed, with lovely crimp and a very soft hand. It will be a dream to process and a joy to spin.

I skirted the heck out of this fleece and all that remains is ready to toss in the wash tub right out of the shipping box. No digging through second cuts, tags, or questionable bits. Just beautiful fiber waiting for its next adventure.

🖍️ Color

This will scour to a soft white.

❤️ Why It Matters

Spice has never set hoof on the sanctuary, but she is helping support it all the same. By donating her fleece, she is helping provide feed, veterinary care, and all the ordinary things that become extraordinary expenses when caring for animals in need. Not bad for a ewe whose biggest contribution this year was growing an absolutely lovely sweater and then generously giving it away.

SOLD

🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece - Toula 🐑

Toula is one of our beloved matriarchs, the kind of ewe who never feels the need to prove herself because she already knows exactly who she is. Calm, steady, and quietly confident, she moves through life with an air of dignity that simply cannot be rushed. She adores treats and affection, but only on her terms. Toula does not beg. She does not grovel. She simply appears beside you, gives you a look that says, “I trust you know what is expected here,” and patiently waits for tribute to be delivered.

🧶 About the Fleece

Toula is the result of an oops liaison many years ago between a Romney momma and a Wensleydale daddy-o. Somehow she inherited the best of both. Every year she keeps us guessing because sometimes she grows a fleece that leans silver and sometimes one that leans charcoal. It’s always a surprise waiting under the wool.

This year’s fleece is a beautiful blend of charcoal, pewter, and silver tones with lovely lock structure and a soft hand. It has the luster and character of her Wensleydale heritage with a bit of the practicality and ease of processing that makes it a joy to work with. Whether you spin, felt, blend, or dye, this fleece offers endless possibilities.

🖍️ Color

My camera continues its campaign of misinformation. The darker photos are the most accurate representation of color.

This fleece is a beautiful combination of charcoal, pewter, and silver, accented by sun kissed taupe and light chocolate tips. Once processed and blended during carding, I expect it will create a gorgeous weathered charcoal gray with natural depth, dimension, and heathered character that cannot be replicated with dye.

❤️ Why It Matters

When you purchase Toula’s fleece, you’re helping support a ewe who has spent years quietly serving as one of the steady hearts of the sanctuary. She asks very little from life beyond snacks, respect, and maintaining her dignity at all times. Your purchase helps provide hay, veterinary care, shelter, and probably a few extra treats for a ewe who fully expects to continue living her best life as the royalty she believes herself to be.

🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece - Zinnia 🐑

Zinnia is a funny ewe. Sometimes we call her InZania because she can be a wee bit insane. Or off. Or just plain flipping crazy. Whatever term you prefer. Oddly enough, she genuinely loves people and treats. Just don’t surprise her or you may lose a knee, hip, or your dignity as she launches past you like the hounds of hell are nipping at her heels. One moment she’s quietly accepting cookies, the next she’s convinced a leaf blew the wrong direction and we’re all going to perish.

🧶 About the Fleece

This is a lovely Wensleydale fleece with well defined locks, bright luster, and an incredibly soft, silky hand. The staple length ranges from 6 to 7 inches, making it versatile for a variety of fiber projects.

One thing that really impressed me about this fleece is how easily it releases dirt. I dropped some of the dirtiest locks into a trough of water sitting in the sun, without any soap at all, and much of the dust and grime simply soaked away. This should scour very easily and be a pleasure to process. See pics for rinsed vs raw.

🖍️ Color

This will scour to a soft white.

❤️ Why It Matters

Every fleece sale helps provide hay, veterinary care, hoof trimming, shelter maintenance, and all the little things that keep sanctuary life running smoothly. Zinnia contributes mostly by creating chaos, demanding treats, and occasionally testing the structural integrity of human knees, so she’s counting on her fleece to pull a little more of the financial weight around here.

🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece - Isobel 🐑

Isobel came to us last year with ten of her flock mates when a change in circumstances meant their family could no longer keep them. She arrived with her enormous personality fully intact. Friendly, curious, and convinced that every treat belongs to her, Isobel spends her days collecting scritches, supervising snack distribution, and inhaling treats with impressive enthusiasm. If there is food involved, Isobel is interested. If there are scritches involved, she is very interested.

🧶 About the Fleece

This is my ideal Wensleydale fleece. Well defined locks with very little cross fiber, beautiful curlicue ringlets, bright luster, and an incredibly soft silky hand that would work wonderfully next to the skin. The locks are uniform and well formed with excellent character throughout. There is only scant VM, making this fleece easy to prepare and a joy to process. It will scour beautifully, has a high expected yield, and offers endless possibilities whether you spin, felt, weave, or simply admire gorgeous locks.

❤️ Why It Matters

When you bring home Isobel’s fleece, you’re bringing home a little piece of her story. Every lock came from a ewe who believes snacks are a basic right, scritches should be available on demand, and personal space is highly overrated. The proceeds from every fleece sale help provide feed, veterinary care, shelter, and all the extras that rescue sheep like Isobel need to live safe, happy lives. And according to Isobel, more treats. Definitely more treats.

🐑 Wensleydale/BFL Fleece - Dini 🐑

Dini is an opinionated little sprite who is never shy about sharing her thoughts on absolutely everything. Especially the speed at which dinner is delivered. In Dini’s opinion, every meal is already running at least ten minutes late. Only the finest alfalfa and grain will do for this girl. She is a bit of a diva, but honestly, if I could grow a fleece like this, I’d probably be a diva too.

🧶 About the Fleece

This fleece is special.

I hand sheared Dini two days after giving her a thorough rinse, then skirted it with every intention of keeping it for myself and entering it in the fiber show. The fleece was ready. The sheep was ready. The problem is that attending a fiber show would require me to leave the sheep and interact with people. As it turns out, I prefer sheep. By a lot.

So here we are.

This fleece is a breathtaking blend of soft white and the palest dove gray silver. The gray is delicate and subtle, adding beautiful depth and dimension without overpowering the brightness of the white. If you choose to dye it, those soft gray tones will create incredible visual interest and richness. If you leave it natural, it will be absolutely stunning all on its own.

The lock structure is lovely, the luster is beautiful, and the softness is exactly what you hope for when dreaming about next-to-the-skin projects. It is remarkably clean, with scant VM, strong tips, no breaks, and an estimated yield that should make fiber processors very happy. This is one of those fleeces that makes you start planning projects before it even reaches the wash tub.

🖍️ Color

Soft white with delicate dove gray silver highlights.

🐑 85.7% Wensleydale Fleece - Whisper 🐑

When Whisper’s mom arrived at the sanctuary, little did we know she was carrying a tiny surprise. Four months later, that surprise slipped into the world as quietly as her name suggests. In fact, her mother hid her so well that we didn’t even discover her until later that evening. We certainly weren’t expecting a lamb to arrive four months after her mom’s rescue from a hoarding situation.

From the very beginning, Whisper has lived up to her name. She is a gentle soul who moves through life quietly and contentedly, never demanding attention or causing a fuss. Her favorite place has always been right beside her mom. Two years later, not much has changed. The two are still rarely seen apart, moving through the pasture together like a matched set.

🧶 About the Fleece

This is a lovely little fleece. While it has all the character of a Wensleydale, with beautiful luster and lock structure, it isn’t entirely Wensleydale. The result is something rather special. This fleece is softer, loftier, and has a bolder curl than you might expect. It will process beautifully into a drapey yarn with lovely movement, or blend wonderfully with a higher crimp fiber to add memory and bounce.

There is no cotting, and I skirted this fleece aggressively. You may find the occasional lock with a tiny bit of VM, but it should fall out easily during processing. Overall, this is the kind of fleece that practically wants to do the work for you. It will be an absolute pleasure to wash, prep, and spin.

🖍️ Color

This fleece will scour easily to a bright, beautiful white that will take dye wonderfully or shine all on its own.

Whisper entered the world as an unexpected surprise and has spent the last two years proving that the quiet ones often leave the biggest impression. Every fleece purchase helps provide feed, veterinary care, shelter, and all the things sheep like Whisper need to live safe, happy lives. While some sheep demand attention, Whisper is content simply being near the ones she loves. That’s a pretty good reminder that not everything valuable has to be loud.

🐑 Wensleydale Wether Fleece - Lars 🐑

Three year old Wensleydale wether Lars is a dapper fellow with the soul of a middle manager and the heart of a kindergarten teacher. He takes his self appointed supervisory duties very seriously. He is not bossy about it. He simply appears wherever work is happening and observes with quiet concern, as though the entire operation might fall apart without his guidance. Beneath all that dignity, however, is a softhearted sweetheart who genuinely cares about everyone around him.

🧶 About the Fleece

This is a lovely fleece. I skirted it almost lock by lock. In fact, I became so absorbed in flicking and popping locks that I looked up and realized an hour had vanished into the void. Needless to say, this fleece received the full OCD treatment. It started around 8 lbs and the final product is 2.94 lbs. The result is a beautifully prepared fleece with lovely lock structure, wonderful luster, and a soft hand that is an absolute pleasure to handle. It is one of those fleeces that keeps making you stop and admire it while you’re working.

🖍️ Color

My camera continues its campaign of outright deception and insists on bleaching out dark fleeces. The photos and video exaggerate both the lighter tips and overall brightness. The darker images are the most accurate. This fleece is predominantly black with scattered silver fibers and tips in shades of umber and sienna. When carded or blended during processing, those colors work together to create a gorgeous dark chocolate heathered effect with subtle silver highlights and natural variation that gives the finished fiber tremendous character.

SOLD

🐑 Wensleydale/Border Leicester Ewe Fleece - Taffy 🐑

Taffy is one of the friendliest girls in the flock, which is ironic because she looks permanently convinced that she has just witnessed something deeply concerning. Her wide eyed expression has earned her the unofficial title of Most Startled Sheep Alive. Every photo looks like she has just heard shocking gossip or remembered she left the stove on. The truth is that Taffy is a sweetheart who enjoys attention, treats, and making friends. Her face may scream “PANIC!” but her personality is pure sugar.

🧶 About the Fleece

This beautiful Wensleydale/Border Leicester cross fleece combines the best qualities of both breeds. It has lovely luster, softness, and a versatile handle that opens the door to all kinds of projects. While I would personally save the finest fibers for next to skin items, this fleece shines in applications where strength, durability, drape, and sheen are desired.

🖍️ Color

My camera continues its ongoing campaign of misinformation against colored fleeces. The photos and video are overexposing the colors and exaggerating the sun kissed tips. In person, the fleece is much richer and more subtle. After washing, you can expect a gorgeous range of dove gray, soft pewter, charcoal, and smoky silver tones. The tips that appear quite tan in the photos will scour much lighter, leaving mostly soft beige highlights rather than the dramatic contrast shown by my overly enthusiastic camera.

SOLD

🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece – Muffin 🐑

Muffin is one of the popular girls around here. Her mother Munchkin trained her from birth in the ancient and sacred art of treat mooching. Muffin has refined the craft into a lifestyle. She prefers Frosted Mini Wheats over spice cookies because apparently she has standards and a very specific brand identity.

Muffin is always in the middle of every event, every conversation and every bit of barn gossip. If there is chaos, Muffin is nearby pretending she had absolutely nothing to do with it while chewing dramatically. A social butterfly wrapped in expensive looking curls.

🧶 About the Fleece

This is a gorgeous example of a Wensleydale fleece. Beautiful lock structure, incredible luster and a really versatile staple length that is not too long or too short. It is the Goldilocks of fleeces.

Now… let us discuss Muffin’s personal life choices.

A substantial amount of this fleece ended up under the skirting table because Muffin firmly believes cleanliness is for lesser sheep. She prefers to marinate herself in alfalfa, opinions and questionable decisions. I skirted this lock by lock while muttering to myself like a Victorian woman slowly losing her grip on reality.

What remains though? Absolutely beautiful fleece. Strong tips, no breaks, minimal VM and glorious shiny locks that practically beg to be spun into something luxurious.

🖍️ Color

The color is predominantly black with only a few strands of silver sprinkled throughout. The sun kissed ends are still a rich chocolate rather than faded brown.

My camera continues its campaign of outright dishonesty and keeps bleaching the fleece lighter than it really is. The photos where the fleece appears closest to black are the most accurate. This will spin up into a very dark chocolate or soft black with gorgeous depth and richness.

🎥 Video in first comment, please forgive the bottle lambs in the background staging a protest.
