🌱 Dig day has officially started!
Today we started digging our first-year dahlia seedlings, and after spending more than 5 months in the ground, they are definitely looking tired! 😂 But underground, there are some exciting surprises waiting for us.
Here are a few of our favorite first-year seedlings that we dug up today.
One question we get all the time is: Do you have to wait until frost kills your dahlias before digging them? The answer is no!
Contrary to popular belief, your dahlias don’t need to be hit by frost before you dig them. If they’ve been growing in the ground for 120+ days, the tubers have had plenty of time to develop, and you can start digging them.
In fact, we’ve been digging our dahlias before frost for the past 3 years, and we’ve had great results with both curing and winter storage.
Here’s one important step we take before digging: we stop watering about a week beforehand. This gives the soil and tubers a chance to dry out a bit, which makes digging easier and helps reduce excess moisture going into storage.
