Have you ever wondered how commercial fishermen navigate the Great Lakes when visibility isn’t perfect?

One important piece of equipment aboard many commercial fishing vessels is marine radar! 📡

Radar works by sending out radio waves that bounce off objects and return to the vessel’s radar system. This helps fishermen identify what’s around them, even when it’s difficult to see with the naked eye.

🌊 Here’s what radar helps our fishermen do:

📡 Detect other vessels: Radar can help crews identify boats and ships in the surrounding waters.

🌫️ Navigate in reduced visibility: Fog, rain, and darkness can make it difficult to see what’s ahead. Radar provides another important source of information.

⚓ Identify obstacles: Depending on conditions and equipment, radar can help detect shorelines, buoys, and other objects above the water.

🐟 Improve situational awareness: Radar gives fishermen another tool to help make informed decisions while working on the lake.

Did you know? Radar doesn’t show fish swimming underwater! That’s a different technology called sonar, which uses sound waves rather than radio waves.

While radar is an incredibly useful tool, it doesn’t replace experience, careful navigation, or keeping a proper lookout.

Tough Waters

An ode to the Great Lakes fishermen

Some days the lake is gentle, Like glass beneath the sky. Other days she rises angry, With waves that climb so high.

The wind can turn in moments, The clouds can swallow light. And men who know these waters Must trust their hands and sight.

There’s no promise in the sunrise, No guarantee of calm. Just weathered hands and working boats, And faith to carry on.

For generations they have followed The waters deep and wide, With lessons from their fathers And tradition as their guide.

The nets are heavy, hours long, The cold cuts to the bone. But every fish brought safely in Is a story of its own.

For the lake is more than livelihood, More than a place to roam. She’s a teacher and a provider, And to many, she’s called home.

So when you see a fishing boat Returning through the spray, Remember all the unseen work That brought its catch your way.

For tough waters make strong fishermen, But respect keeps them wise. And every journey home again Is a blessing in disguise.

🐟⚓ GEAR SPOTLIGHT: The Frazier Brothers at Work!

Today we’re taking you behind the scenes with Dave and Kevin Frazier as the brothers work together making a gill net!

Commercial fishing involves much more than heading out onto the Great Lakes and bringing home fish. There’s an incredible amount of preparation, maintenance, skill, and teamwork that happens before the boat ever leaves the dock.

🪢 Did you know?

Gill nets are a type of fishing gear made from panels of mesh netting suspended vertically in the water.

Fish swimming into the net can become caught in the mesh, typically around their gills or body.

The size of the mesh is an important part of how a gill net works, helping determine which sizes of fish are most likely to be caught.

🌊 Making a gill net takes skill and patience!

From working with the netting to preparing the floats and weights, each part plays an important role in how the gear performs in the water.

For families like ours, these are skills learned through years of hands-on experience and passed down from one generation to the next.

💙 It’s more than making fishing gear. It’s brothers working together, sharing knowledge, and continuing a family tradition on the Great Lakes.
