Hi folks! A couple quick CSA and meal kit updates:

-Sign-ups for this fall’s 4-week mini CSA are now closed. It will start not this weekend, but next. Members will get an email from me soon!

-A limited number of spring, summer HALF, and fall shares are still available for next year. I am still offering a discount to folks who pay in full, but today is officially the last day for that! If you sign up for just one session (spring, summer, OR fall) and pay in full you get 10% off. Sign up for all three sessions and pay in full for 15% off! I know the payment plans are helpful, but when people disregard the deadlines I set it turns into a huge headache for me really quickly. By paying in full, we can avoid the payment reminder emails and everything else! But again... today is the last day to take advantage of the discounts for doing so!

-I have 5 meal kit spots still available for fall and winter. You can sign up for one, the other, or both. If you sign up for fall you just have to pay in full ($100) because we are already past the final payment deadline. But if you sign up for both fall AND winter, and pay in full, I will still honor the discounted price of $171. Today only though! After today, if any spots remain they will require full payment.

As always, I grateful prefer Venmo or PayPal to payments submitted through the website. (It is SLOW, and the fees are steep!)

Also as always: thank you for supporting local farms! ✨

So I’m not... SAYING they’re my favorite? But if there was an award for best CSA/meal kit members it would definitely go to the Groves family after today.

Have you ever been REALLY TIRED? Have you ever only been midway through a really long and hard day, that is itself only a little more than midway through what has been a really long and hard year? Have you ever found yourself reciting, over and over again, the only Samuel Beckett you know by heart (“I can’t go on; I’ll go on”)? Have you ever managed to somehow lose your phone in several bushels of cauliflower, and have to tear your entire truck apart from top to bottom on the side of the road to find it again, all while you are falling further and further behind on meal kit deliveries?

Well, I have. But then a few houses later I pulled up to the Groves’ place, and they came rushing out with a HOMEMADE CONCORD GRAPE POPSICLE that they made with the grapes they got in their last CSA share. 😭😭😭

And all was right in the world again. These are the things that make life worth living. I guess I am saying they’re my favorite. 🤷🏻‍♀️🍇💜

It proved to be an enormously challenging year for me. Personally, that is - but when you ARE your business, it’s all wrapped up together no matter what. At least the Concords are here. They have become one of my favorite harbingers of fall. The short seasonality of all things local reminds me that time marches on - even when things are hard!
- and, in the words of my mother, this too shall pass. CSA members: don’t forget to go grab your goodies today! ✨

It’s been a busy few days getting the July meal kit delivered all over Erie and Crawford counties! Summer is all about fresh fresh fresh - and we’re keeping it that way with this month’s recipe for all-local Asian-style lettuce wraps. Featuring pasture-raised pork from Deer Run Acres in Edinboro, GORGEOUS lettuce from Good Stuff Farm in Corry, green beans and cucumbers from Finnell Farms in Harborcreek, and fresh basil from FrankenRuth Farms in Franklin Center... with a few veggies from French Street too for good measure. 😉 For dessert: delicious peak-season blueberries from Clorley Farms in North East! Eating local really never looked (or tasted!) so good. Many thanks from all of the farms involved to all of our meal kit subscribers! ✨

It’s CSA week 3A! This week all of the shares feature really yummy blueberries from Clorley Farms in North East. It’s pretty much peak blueberry season right now, and the rain is (finally!) supposed to let up after today, so I highly recommend getting out there this week to take advantage of their pick-your-own!

Half share members this week also received green beans, zucchini, Serrano peppers, and pearl onions - as well as a copy of the latest issue of Edible Western NY magazine! Full share members received red potatoes, cucumber, Red Long of Florence onions, and the farm’s first-ever celery. 💯

As always, optional add-ons include locally-grown flowers from Wild Field Urban Farm, sourdough bread from Majestic Baking Company, coffee beans from Ember+Forge, and free-range eggs from Copley's Fresh Start Farm in Waterford.

Don’t forget that there are still spots available for this fall’s 4-week mini CSA! 🎃 And sign-ups are open for the 2022 season as well. All the details are available through the link below. Have a cozy day, everyone! ✨

Hi folks! Today and tomorrow are your last chance to sign up for the fall and/or winter meal kits. It seems early but we have some specialty stuff in the works and we need hard counts for the butcher. Fall kits are one per month, Oct-Dec and winter kits are one per month, Jan-March. You can just pay deposits, or pay in full for 10% off (Venmo or PayPal the fee-free way greatly preferred!) Don’t miss this chance to learn about year-round local eating in the Erie region and to support a whole bunch of great local farms. Thanks so much! 🙏

There are lots of really important conversations happening in our community right now on the topic of food accessibility. What does equitable food access actually look like? Is healthy food a right, or a privilege for those who can afford it?

We here at French Street Farms believe that everyone deserves real access to good food, regardless of their income. That is why - as part of our farm’s recently announced expansion - it is our goal for up to 50% of the farm’s production in 2022 to be distributed to those most in need in our community. But we need your help to make that happen.

We are calling this initiative Good Food for All. In short, the program will operate as a kind of wholesale farm share, in which fresh food is delivered weekly to local non-profits who are distributing food to those in need.

Philanthropy is only a short-term solution to the very large and complex problem of entrenched poverty. But even as we work to build an economy that serves everyone, people need to eat in the mean time. It is our hope that with your support, Good Food for All can help to close the gap on fresh food access in the city of Erie. Read all about it and sponsor a share today via the farm’s website!

Now taking online orders for this year’s garlic braids. I only have 11 left to sell for the year. I expect they will go fairly quickly. The sampler packs are sold out now, FYI.

This is a softneck variety of garlic called Ozark. It is currently only partially cured (because it needs to be braided while the stems are still pliable.) For this reason I will include care instructions for folks for while the garlic finishes curing. Once cured, this is a great storage variety and could last you a full year (if you don’t eat it all well before then.) Hang in your kitchen and cut bulbs loose as needed.

Grown using organic practices. Hand cleaned and braided. 15 bulbs/braid, $25. Venmo (@french-streetfarms) or PayPal to claim. Pick up at the Little Italy Farmers Market or add $3 for local delivery. I will post again when they are sold out!

The garlic harvest and processing is really dominating my life right now. I will be at the SSJ Neighborhood Network Little Italy Farmers Market today, but ONLY with a limited number of garlic braids to sell. The variety is Ozark, I use only organic growing methods, and each braid has 15 bulbs. They are $25 each. After today I will open up online ordering for all remaining braids - I only have a pretty small number available in total this year. (More next year!) Market today is your opportunity to look at them in person before deciding to buy or not - I expect the rest will sell online before next week.

I also still have just two garlic variety packs available for pre-order: ten distinct varieties of garlic, labeled and with brief descriptions, for $25. Venmo or PayPal to claim them. Pickup (or delivery for a small fee) of the variety packs will be in 2-3 weeks.

Market today is 3-6pm, 331 W. 18th St. Come say hi!

When should I expect my winter meal kit?
Wow! Delicious chili and poached pears! I have made chili hundreds of times but never with beef broth as a liquid and never with dried beans. In fact, everyone in this house thinks if chili has beans, then it's not chili, it's soup! Haha! Well, tonight, my most particular son ate a whole bowl of chili, beans and all! This was a winner! I have never eaten poached pears so I was very interested in trying them. I used cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger in the sauce. What a fantastic way to eat pears!

The market opens to the general public at 4. ☑️Masks are required and must be worn properly at all times. If you do not have a mask, one will be provided to you. ☑️There will be a limited amount of people admitted to the market at any given time due to social distancing.
