The Hickory Chickery

The Hickory Chickery Welcome to The Hickory Chickery! We are a small hobby farm in NC that works with chickens of rare or heritage breed. We breed heritage and rare breed chickens.

We believe in quality not quantity and work to improve the overall health and vigor of our birds as well as improve the physical beauty! We strive to bring you breeds that are hardy, productive, and beautiful. We have been breeding since 2013 and continue to improve our birds through selective breeding and humane culling. We rehome birds that do not make our breeding program and do not squeeze chi

cks. All breeds are sold straight run. We breed for healthy immune systems so we do not vaccinate. Our flocks are given quality feed, clean housing, and are on vitamin and probiotic regimens year round. We do not breed for show birds but we do follow breed standards and in many cases you may get birds from us that are show quality. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and our wish is that you enjoy your feathered family as much as we do!

Hi all! I have 16 Horizon Chick Shipping boxes available. I used these for years and they were my favorite. I won’t be shipping any chicks this season. I will also throw in a stack of grass mats that will fit into the bottom. You can also use them as nesting box liners. This is a big savings compared to buying them on the Horizon website. Cash only. I will not accept any other forms of payment. I can meet in Lillington or Fuquay Varina. Questions welcome!

Good morning folks! I see I have a lot of new followers lately. Hello and welcome to my farm page. We have been under construction on our new home for a good while. We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. We hope to be done in a few more months. I look forward to having a real home again and start our chicken coops. I am not sure of the breed plan yet but I do think I want to shift to hardy homestead type breeds. In today’s world I believe we all need to be more self sufficient and start relying on our own food sources. We are in the holiday season so I hope you all are well! I’ll be posting real videos and untouched photos of our new place and the progress we’ve made. Happy turkey week and take a moment to enjoy all the chaos most of us have in preparation for the big day. Cheers!

Happy New Year all! We are a few months away from finishing our new home. I just wanted to say thank you for following my page for these past years. We will rebuild our little chicken farm when we get moved in. We aren’t sure of the timeline yet and we will be in Virginia but excited to start fresh with all the knowledge we’ve learned over the last 13 years. Hope everyone is well and hang in there! Spring is coming!

Good afternoon my fellow feathered friend lovers (say that ten times fast!) It’s been a minute since I said hello! Lots of life changes this past year and a half. We sold our home, are renting while we build in the mountains (hopefully breaking ground in April) and caregiving for a senior in the family. I hit some roadblocks with my Vorwerk birds. Apparently the import from GF farms carried some faults which is to be expected but one fault is the knock knee gene. This is extremely hard to breed out so I am starting over. I’m waiting on some new genetics. I will still have Vorwerk as backyard quality only. They lay fine and are still beautiful family birds but I can’t in good conscience sell them for breeding programs. Updates to this will come down the road! I still have Pita Pinta which are excellent layers and dual purpose birds. I will be hatching those on request. I do not have the space to keep chicks on hand but I can custom hatch. I will also be bringing in Australorp. Since the country has taken this serious economic downturn I want to have a nice production breed. They also lay well into the winter months. I may have those available late fall. Stay tuned! I have some other projects cooking but since I’m limited on space I’ll have to be selective. I hope everyone out there is doing well and I appreciate you following my page. Happy hatching! Some of my Vorwerk eggs (finally!)

Our Story

We raise heritage and rare breed chickens. We strive to bring you breeds that are hardy, productive, and beautiful. We have been breeding since 2013 and continue to improve our birds through selective breeding and humane culling. We rehome birds that do not make our breeding program and do not squeeze chicks. All breeds are sold straight run. Our flocks are given quality feed, clean housing, and are on vitamin and probiotic regimens year round. We do not breed for show birds but we do follow breed standards and in many cases you may get birds from us that are show quality. This is a hobby for us and not a way to make money. If we depended on our chickens to make money we would be in some serious trouble! If we cover their food bill we consider that a win! We try to keep our prices reasonable so that everyone can enjoy having these wonderful rare breeds. I have had many folks ask me “What is the difference in your chickens and Tractor Supply (the $2 chick?) Well, we source our birds from top breeders around the country. We work with them to breed in vigor and hardiness. We feel healthy parents will give you a healthier chick which in turn will live longer and lay longer. We also consider biosecurity here a top priority. We do not allow tours of the farm. It disappoints folks sometimes but it is necessary to keep a closed farm so we can feel secure we are selling healthy stock and not risking the health of the birds we put so much blood and sweat into raising. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and our wish is that you enjoy your feathered family as much as we do!
