Hey folks here’s an update on the HPAI. Please for the safety of your birds and your neighbors don’t go to swaps and auction houses until this dies down. If we all lay low hopefully it will pass faster.

https://www.facebook.com/100070853269605/posts/158079406563834/?d=n

UPDATED ALERT (2/15/22): HPAI has been detected in New Hampshire (Rockingham County, Mallard ducks) and in a backyard flock in Virginia. It has also been found in commercial poultry in Kentucky. **Protect your birds, and your neighbors' birds, with good biosecurity procedures.**

ALERT: 2/9/2022 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a commercial turkey flock in Indiana (IN). HPAI has also been found in wild birds and domestic turkeys in Canada, and in wild birds in east-coast states (NC, SC, VA, FL).

Although wild birds may be infected and never appear sick, HPAI is a deadly disease for chickens, turkeys, and many other kinds of birds. Infected domestic poultry may die suddenly, have decreased energy, appetite, egg production; soft-shelled or misshapen eggs; swelling of the head, comb, eyelids, wattles, or hocks; nasal discharge, snicking, coughing, or sneezing; uncoordinated gait; or diarrhea.

MDAR recommends that all backyard and commercial poultry owners institute strong biosecurity measures to prevent domestic poultry from having contact with wild birds, their feathers or droppings. This may mean temporarily confining your birds inside a shelter. This recommendation is in place for the next 90 days and will be reevaluated at that time.

Any unexpected deaths or other signs should be reported immediately to the Division of Animal Health (617-626-1795). Increased numbers of wild bird deaths should be reported to the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (508-389-6300). Prompt reporting will expedite rapid testing and diagnosis.

Agriculture Officials Find More Avian Flu Cases in Wild Birds, Caution Poultry Farmers

Folks, biosecurity is extremely important right now. Please stay away from auctions, flock swaps, and don’t bring in birds from anywhere until this starts to wane. Stay closed and don’t allow foot traffic on your farms. If you go to feed supply places disinfect your shoes. Pray this doesn’t get rolling.

Anyone need a few good men? I have 4-5 young cockerels that are a month away from finishing out and one year and a half old cock bird ready to be 🍗 stew or manage the ladies. Also have two hens almost two years old I’m culling from my breeders. One was mauled by a coon this summer but has healed nicely and should be back in full by Spring. They are both finished molting but still on break. Pm me!

Good morning all! Two more days of moving and it is done. Well, first leg anyway! If you have sent me messages or are still waiting on information about stock I’ll be getting with everyone else soon as we get settled in. It has been a long drawn out hard process and very emotional as well. Waiting on a rollback truck to take four of my coops to the rental. Kind of sad to see them pulled out. The heat is coming y’all ready? 🙂

They will be fifteen and you can chose the chicks. I do not sex birds but you are welcome to pick. They are five weeks old this week and ready to go out just in time for the warm streak to hit.

Good morning all! UPDATE POST! Thank you for your patience if you have been on a waitlist for chicks 🐥 or 🥚. We have been in the middle of preparing our house for sale and it is under contract. I haven’t been very active on here but I haven’t forgotten you all. I also have been following closely the reports on shipping chicks. USPS is still unpredictable and dismal in my opinion and as expensive as shipping is and as valuable as my little loves are I’m not ready to ship them until things improve. The only exceptions will be folks that want to risk overnight shipping and take on the expense of that. It will be ship at your own risk. Believe me I hate it as much as you but losing half or more chicks wouldn’t be cost effective for you either. Sooooo......any of you who are on the chick list you can keep your place and I will offer hatching eggs or you can pass on eggs right now and I will reassess later in the summer or early fall for chicks. I will also be happy for you to pick up in person and I will set eggs to work with those of you who want to take advantage of pickup. I will be contacting you off my list to let you know. This is such a rotten time in history and a crappy situation and I’m so sorry for all of us. I hope you understand! Please message me with questions or requests and I’ll be in touch with everyone soon. Pic for cute factor....😂

Good morning all! It’s a bit chilly today but sitting on my deck feeling like Spring may be on the way! If you are breeding it’s a great time to deworm your birds and start arranging your breeding pens. Remember hens need at least 30 days with their new man to make sure he’s the baby daddy! I’m seeing a lot of people dealing with worms and asking about treatment. I believe all of his rain allows access to red worms and starts the parasite cycle. There is SO much misinformation out there. Natural remedies are great but been there done that and ended up behind the 8 ball. I’m going to post a list of medications and withdrawal times for them. These are compiled by a vet. I personally use Wazine and follow with Valbazen. I also drop Ivermectin every three months. Hope it helps you!

Good afternoon chicken family! I want to let everyone know I’m working on moving my entire farm page to MEWE for good. I will eventually have no FB page. I’m also looking into a simple web page but we have a lot going on here so I’m not sure how long it will take yet. We are putting our house up for sale and will be moving temporarily until we build again. Some of you found me from my individual pages I run for Pita Pinta Asturiana Chickens and Vorwerk of North America. I plan to move those pages as well. I still plan to have my birds and fill my waitlists. If anything changes I will update you. I appreciate you all and hope you are all well. If you want to continue to follow the Hickory Chickery the link to my MEWE page is pinned here at the top. Here are a few photos of some of my lovelies!

Good morning chicken friends! I have some Pita Pinta chicks coming off on Friday. This will be the last hatch of the year unless it is a hatch by request. What a beautiful awesome morning! God is good folks! Except....it’s hawk migration so keep an eye out for your feathered family. I have two Red Tails stalking my pens so I’ve been spending a lot of time outside. Most of mine have fishing line but I have a couple that are too big. Time to make some scarecrows I reckon. Anyone that is interested in pullets I have two Pitas that are two months old available. I also have a bonus to go with if interested. Pitas are awesome layers and sweet birds. You won’t be sorry! PM me! Pickup only Erwin NC.

Our Story

We raise heritage and rare breed chickens. We strive to bring you breeds that are hardy, productive, and beautiful. We have been breeding since 2013 and continue to improve our birds through selective breeding and humane culling. We rehome birds that do not make our breeding program and do not squeeze chicks. All breeds are sold straight run. Our flocks are given quality feed, clean housing, and are on vitamin and probiotic regimens year round. We do not breed for show birds but we do follow breed standards and in many cases you may get birds from us that are show quality. This is a hobby for us and not a way to make money. If we depended on our chickens to make money we would be in some serious trouble! If we cover their food bill we consider that a win! We try to keep our prices reasonable so that everyone can enjoy having these wonderful rare breeds. I have had many folks ask me “What is the difference in your chickens and Tractor Supply (the $2 chick?) Well, we source our birds from top breeders around the country. We work with them to breed in vigor and hardiness. We feel healthy parents will give you a healthier chick which in turn will live longer and lay longer. We also consider biosecurity here a top priority. We do not allow tours of the farm. It disappoints folks sometimes but it is necessary to keep a closed farm so we can feel secure we are selling healthy stock and not risking the health of the birds we put so much blood and sweat into raising. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and our wish is that you enjoy your feathered family as much as we do!

I'm very pleased and excited to be entering the Vorwerk world thanks to Christa! Of 18 eggs I placed 17 in the brooder this AM! Woot! Thank you for providing highly fertile and healthy eggs!
Any hatching eggs available?

Hey Christa! I have a friend looking for a rooster. What all do you have available?
Christa do you sell created chicks or pullets?
Your birds are beautiful. I see you have few crested too. Obviously I don't have any of those. I will wait to hear from you about shipping. Thanks again for the opportunity to get some chicks and for looking at your photos.
