The Hickory Chickery

The Hickory Chickery Welcome to The Hickory Chickery! We are a small farm in Erwin NC that works with chickens of rare or heritage breed. We believe in quality not quantity and work to improve the overall health and vigor of our birds as well as improve the physical beauty!

We breed heritage and rare breed chickens. We strive to bring you breeds that are hardy, productive, and beautiful. We have been breeding since 2013 and continue to improve our birds through selective breeding and humane culling. We rehome birds that do not make our breeding program and do not squeeze chicks. All breeds are sold straight run and vaccinated for Marek's disease unless the buyer requests no vaccination. Our flocks are given quality feed, clean housing, and are on vitamin and probiotic regimens year round. We do not breed for show birds but we do follow breed standards and in many cases you may get birds from us that are show quality. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and our wish is that you enjoy your feathered family as much as we do!

Good morning chicken friends! I’ve had a ton of requests for pullets this year. My space is limited so unless I grow some out for myself and then cull out for coloration or faults I rarely have extras. Here’s your chance! If you are interested in sexed pullets (baby chicks) message me for more information! I will have some available at the end of the month. Pic is some eggs from my Pita Pinta. I have one lady that consistently throws double yolks. 🐣

I have been really hammered with predators this Spring. I put my garage babies out a few days ago and noticed an area of hardware cloth that something was trying to pull away. This morning I walked out and almost stepped on this dude....I think I probably peed a little.Never go feed Chickens when you’re half asleep!

Howdy chicken friends! I surely hope you all are weathering the Covid crisis well. We are locked down here and me and the natives are restless! I have been moving towards some different breeds here lately and really trying to offer birds that aren’t common locally but are still solid birds. This crisis has made me appreciate having my own egg source and meat if necessary. You’ve heard me brag about my Pita Pintas before. They are fast becoming one of my favorites I have ever had here. I want to have them at least a full year before I write that in stone but so far they are the total package. Big, even tempered, vigorous, fairly thrifty eaters for their size, and productive. Oh, and they are eye candy! I have 15 hens and average 9-12 eggs a day. Today I got 12. The eggs are very nice size and will get even bigger as they get older. The Roos are good size at 20-24 weeks and that was without finishing them. I will be offering Pitas in the fall! Hopefully soon I will be welcoming some new chicks here as well so stay tuned!

North Carolina reports low-pathogenic avian flu

Good morning all! With all the Coronavirus information flooding the news there are some nasty happenings getting overlooked in the poultry world. North Carolina and South Carolina has outbreaks of avian influenza in turkey houses. The information I received today was it came from wild birds. There are nine cases here in our state and one highly pathogenic. This information will change as birds are tested so stay informed. There have been no backyard farms affected YET. However...ILT is rearing it’s ugly head as well and that is in backyard farms. Please practice good bio security and keep your farms closed. I feel like we will see more of this.

Happy Birthday to my Vorwerk cock bird Viktor’s second generation of offspring! I set 22 eggs and 18 hatched. The other four looked fully developed or close so blah. I am super happy with this hatch! I forgot about these guys and they were hollering from the incubator tray which was not super comfortable! I took the chance and transferred everyone to the Hatcher and they all popped out great. Very clean hatch. I have another coming off this week so praying for lots of ladies and a few good men!

Good afternoon chicken friends! What a gorgeous day! Since everyone is staying close to home use your time productively and get some of that honey do list knocked out! We cleared out our property line from chicken “junk” and are clearing around the fences. Looks so much nicer! I had a wave of requests for Vorwerk orbs 🥚 and I have returned everyone’s messages I hope. I have one maybe two orders of 🥚 that can be shipped this week from Pen 1 and I am switching to filling 🐥 orders. If you were undecided better jump on! Pen 2 will still be available. Photo below is the Duchess of Devonshire feeding her chickens! 🥰 Wash your hands folks and stay safe!

Chicken updates! I have caught up on Vorwerk 🥚 orbs for those who requested them for immediate shipment. If I somehow missed you please pm me. I will have some first of the week that can go out. I will shortly be switching to incubation mode for those who requested 🐥 fluffs. I am only working with a trio of Barnevelder but will start filling orders for 🥚 or fluffs 🐥 in April. Message me if you haven’t already. The Pita Pinta will go online in fall. I am still absolutely loving them. I no longer have Ameraucana or Marans but have more surprises coming in May! Remember we will lay off incubation by July so plan ahead!

Good morning everyone! Hope you all are staying sane and sequestered! Me....well I’ve been up since 3:30 am. The dog had to poop so I took my flashlight out and did a quick look see of the pens and saw eyeballs. Now I’m used to it by now but it’s 3:30....bring the dog in, grab the shotgun, and roll out. It’s a possum. Another one. This is the third in two weeks. He sees me coming and gets away. Anyone that wants to sing the praises of possums please save your breath. I have caught them with mouthfuls of chicken. So I walk the coops and see eyeballs....two sets in the trees. I have a long history of watching horror movies so part of my brain is expecting to see Mothman. I’m going to die in my husband’s robe. Everyone knows Mothman can’t be killed with a mere shotgun. It’s two owls. That’s a first for me. I left them alone. A few days ago I found a huge TURD on TOP of my fence. General consensus was raccoon. Something has been pillaging my feed bowls at night so the last few days I have put them off the ground. I’ve had a bait! So here’s my meme for today that sums up the Wild West around here....and the infamous turd. Stay safe and watch for predators!

Well even when the sun isn’t shining there’s lots of flowering around here! Well mottling but you get the idea! This is the newest breed I have. These are Pita Pinta Asturiana or Painted Hens. They should lay any day. If you are looking for a good dual purpose bird these will fit the bill. My Roos are five months old and already the size of an average rooster. They have a calm friendly demeanor so far and are good layers. They are also fairly rare. They are endangered and at the end of 2013 only a little over 2,000 existed in the world. These will be a available in late fall.

Finally some beautiful sunshine! Hope everyone is preparing for Spring! I am setting eggs for myself this week and next week so I’m excited to see some fluff balls! Here are some quick pics I took today. Anyone looking for some gorgeous boys (Pita Pinta) I am narrowing down and separating out my hens so I will have some looking for ladies. They are big boys. Today is a great cleaning day so take advantage!

Mornin! Rainy day aside I am looking forward to Spring! Today my Vorwerk pen came off 30 day probation (to insure the correct baby daddy!) and I will be collecting for myself for the next two weeks. I have a waitlist to fill for cotton balls ( 🐥) and orbs ( 🥚 ) so I will be contacting folks shortly to confirm orders. If you have a 🐥 order it may get bumped a tad due to temps here and where you are located. They must be 50 day and night for me to ship. I am only working with a trio of Barnevelder and I won’t start collecting those until April. I will be adding to those to build my blue stock. I will still maintain some blacks as well but blues have always been my fave. I have some new breeds on the way and a project I will be working on but those are a little down the road. When I receive them I will post pictures for y’all to guess! I will be posting a pinned post shortly to explain my rules on shipping, especially 🥚. I have had so many requests and I’m not a fan of shipping 🥚 but since so many want them I am going to roll with it as long as the customer understands the risks. If anyone is interested in Vorwerk 🥚 or 🐥 please message me and I’ll get you on the list. Thanks all!

Three days of Vorwerk collection! Spring is in the air! I have already taken quite a few orders for orbs and cotton balls and I am into April with some of them. If you want to be on the list please message me. I will be setting Vorwerk mid to end of March and Barnevelder in limited quantities beginning in mid May. PM for more information!

Good afternoon peeps! What a gorgeous day! I have been taking advantage of the sun to get some coops cleaned and disinfected. I believe it is going to get wet again toward the end of the week. So I’ve had quite a few messages about chicks and eggs. Here is where I am for Spring: I have Vorwerk I can set right now for anyone who is ready. I will be hatching for myself in about a month. I can also ship Vorwerk eggs right now since the weather is holding nice. Barnevelder will be available at the end of April. I only have a few hens but they are super nice. Right now I have a blue cockerel over the ladies to increase my blue stock so if you want chicks I am taking a list. The Pita Pintas are just the most enjoyable birds. I am excited to offer them as a nice dual purpose addition. They haven’t started to lay yet. They will be four months old in a few weeks so I won’t have them until late summer early fall. I have some other breeds coming if all works our but they will obviously be for next season. If you have any questions, want to be on the list for Spring, or would like a custom hatch, please message me! The photo below is why we like to keep crows around!

Feelin creative today! Happy Saturday Queen Bees!

But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, CHICKENS on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen B
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy......

Good afternoon all! I’m beginning to rearrange pens and cull out for my breeding pens. I have a few young Vorwerk hens up for discussion. Some are being picked up today but I will have a few more. I would like for them to go in pairs or more if possible so they integrate better. If interested message me for details and exchange rates! 😎

Our Story

We raise heritage and rare breed chickens. We strive to bring you breeds that are hardy, productive, and beautiful. We have been breeding since 2013 and continue to improve our birds through selective breeding and humane culling. We rehome birds that do not make our breeding program and do not squeeze chicks. All breeds are sold straight run. Our flocks are given quality feed, clean housing, and are on vitamin and probiotic regimens year round. We do not breed for show birds but we do follow breed standards and in many cases you may get birds from us that are show quality. This is a hobby for us and not a way to make money. If we depended on our chickens to make money we would be in some serious trouble! If we cover their food bill we consider that a win! We try to keep our prices reasonable so that everyone can enjoy having these wonderful rare breeds. I have had many folks ask me “What is the difference in your chickens and Tractor Supply (the $2 chick?) Well, we source our birds from top breeders around the country. We work with them to breed in vigor and hardiness. We feel healthy parents will give you a healthier chick which in turn will live longer and lay longer. We also consider biosecurity here a top priority. We do not allow tours of the farm. It disappoints folks sometimes but it is necessary to keep a closed farm so we can feel secure we are selling healthy stock and not risking the health of the birds we put so much blood and sweat into raising. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and our wish is that you enjoy your feathered family as much as we do!

I'm very pleased and excited to be entering the Vorwerk world thanks to Christa! Of 18 eggs I placed 17 in the brooder this AM! Woot! Thank you for providing highly fertile and healthy eggs!
Any hatching eggs available?
