Check out this delicious recipe shared by

She calls it “Thomas Keller's life-changing method of preparing zucchini + my own recipe for zesty yogurt-dill sauce.”

Here’s her recipe:

“3-4 zucchini
salt
sauce-—
1/2 cup yogurt
large handful of fresh dill, finely chopped
3 large cloves garlic, finely minced
1-2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp salt (to taste)
drizzle of olive oil

slice zucchini lengthwise & score the cut side in a crosshatch pattern. sprinkle salt on the scored side in an even distribution. allow the zucchini to sit for 10 minutes to draw out moisture. pat the zucchini dry with paper towels or napkins. preheat the oven to 450. in a large oven-safe stainless steel pan on medium heat, add a drizzle of oil (avocado, olive) just enough to coat the bottom of pan. add in the zucchini scored side down. cook for about 5-6 minutes, checking occasionally until it is nicely browned but not burnt! once the zucchini is nicely browned/crispy, add the pan to the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes. leave the zucchini face down! :)

while that is cooking, combine all sauce ingredients and stir to combine. taste and add extra salt/garlic/lemon juice/ olive oil as needed.

drizzle the sauce on top of the zucchini and enjoy!”

Let us know how it turns out!

Zucchini harvest time! (Yes! It’s early!)

Here’s an instance of our tractor working in tandem with our harvesting team.

This is the time of year when we have to cover the squash at night to protect them from the cold.

Before the tractor could enter the field, the crew gently removed the blankets from the plants. The tractor was fitted with an implement for carrying baskets.

Then show time! The tractor enters the field with the crew close behind, picking only the ripe squash to be brought to market or packed into CSA boxes.

We are the first in the area to be harvesting zucchini.

Local organic zucchini and soft squash are hard to find this early in the year.

Come down to one of our market stands to get yours or find it in our online store.make frequent appearances in our CSA box.

Check out this NEW Item: the brussels sprout.

Brussels sprouts are the tiny, cabbage-like vegetables that pack a powerful nutritional punch. These tiny veggies have a distinct taste and texture that we think you’ll love.

These little green gems are part of the brassica family, which includes broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. They grow on a tall stalk and grow well in the cool temperatures we have been experiencing.

We harvest them when they are small (about 2 inches in diameter), firm, and bright green.

Not only are Brussels sprouts delicious when roasted with a little bit of olive oil and salt, they are also packed with nutritional benefits. Just one cup of cooked Brussels sprouts provides more than 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and vitamin K. They also contain fiber, folate, and vitamin A.
They also contain sulfur compounds, which have been linked to reducing inflammation in the body and improving heart health.

So the next time you come down to the market stand, give them a try! You’ll see why more and more of our customers are becoming Brussels sprout fans!

Ever wonder where your food comes from?

If you shop with J.R. Organics, you know it is locally grown in Escondido.

A lot of fruit and veggie vendors at the farmers market are not actually local.

Ask your vendor where the food is grown.

Everything we sell is grown right here in North County San Diego.

When you support local growers like J.R. Organics, you know your money is going into supporting your local food economy. You know that your food is grown here by us, that it is picked and packed here, and that it is put on the truck and sent out within 24 hours.

This means you get the freshest, most nutrient-packed produce money can buy.

Come down to the market and ask about joining our CSA!

Grab the kids and turn up the sound for some roaring tractor fun!

Our tractors are hard at work when field conditions allow.

Jessie, Herman, and Gregorio are our dedicated tractor team. After the rains and cold weather pass, they will be out in the fields, working from sun up to sun down preparing the fields.

We’ve got John Deere, Caterpillar, Tilmor, Ferguson, and Kabota tractors and a large array of attachments for different kinds of work.

We have attachments that mow a crop that's finished producing, that disc the soil, that add compost, shape the beds, lay the irrigation, and lay the mulch (black plastic). We have attachments for seeding, weeding, harvesting, and transporting product.

These attachments make the tractors versatile and help us save time and manual labor. Our proficient tractor team helps us run the farm more efficiently. This saves workers from strenuous labor and helps prevent injury.

It also makes it possible for us to bring you the wide variety of produce we grow throughout the year.

Join us in thanking our tractor team for their hard work and dedication to the farm!

Did you know that, until about 500 years ago, carrots were purple?

The Dutch developed the orange carrot we think of when we hear “carrot” today.

We grow a purple heirloom carrot.

Heirloom varieties are older varieties that pre-date hybrid varieties of the later 20th century. Many were passed down through families or communities where they grew particularly well.

We like the Purple Haze heirloom variety because it is sweeter and softer - though it still has some crunch - than your normal orange carrot.

These beauties are great for roasting or snacking. They are beautiful to look at in a salad too.

You can find our purple heirloom carrots in dishes at many San Diego restaurants.

To find them on your own plate, look for them in your CSA box, find them at farmers markets, click on them in our online store (link in our profile), or buy them from a local store - Jimbo’s Naturally or People’s Coop.

Enjoy!

Check out these beauties!

The persian buttercup is popular world wide because of its beauty. It lasts a week in a cut bouquet and comes in a range of colors for different tastes.

The plant was used by Native Americans for healing (treating muscle aches and removing warts). Even today, it is used in homeopathic treatments in Europe.

It is NOT edible though. The sap can cause skin irritation, so be careful when trimming the stems.

When you’re done picking out your groceries, grab a bouquet to lighten up the house.

-Serve hot out of the oven.

Cabbage, a vitamin-packed brassica, is Joe’s favorite right now.

Joe has chosen to grow a regular round green cabbage that takes 70-90 days to be ready for harvest.

He likes this variety because it is significantly sweeter than your generic green cabbage. The leaf layers are tight, making it very dense. When you chop it up, you will notice it expand on your cutting board.

Joe likes to roast his cabbage in quarters like steak or in patties.

He dribbles them with olive oil and roasts them until they are slightly charred. Yum!

Check back tonight for a quick easy roasted cabbage recipe.

Thank you to all of you who have reached out to ask how you can support the farm this time of year with all of the hardships created by the severe weather that we have been experiencing.

The best support you can give is to keep coming out to the farmers market and getting your produce from us.

Here are some other ways you can support: become a CSA member, buy more add-on items when you pick up or through our online store, tell your friends about the farm, buy someone a gift subscription or gift certificate, become a CSA host for a pickup location and introduce us to your neighborhood, come out to our farm events. (We have the farm dinner and the CSA farm tour both coming up soon.)

Maybe you would be interested in volunteering on the farm later on in the year?

Thank you again for all of your well wishes and concern. We appreciate all of you!

Ready to get the most out of your greens?

Store them properly so they are in good condition when you are ready to use them.

This works great with lettuce, kale and chard (wth just about any leafy green actually).

Watch to the end to become a master at storing greens.

Even if you don’t have the time to become a master right now, here are the essentials that will help you get more storage time out of your greens:

1. Make sure the item is dry.

2. Wrap it well in a cloth or towel.

3. Place it in an airtight container.

Our greens are fantastic, especially this time of year. You’ll want to take advantage of their peak season to enjoy them to the fullest.

They are available at market stands and in our online store!

Strawberries are here!

The cold, rainy weather slowed them down this year (image four), but now they are producing in greater volume.

The days are finally getting a little bit warmer and the daylight longer. It is still far below their optimal temperatures. Strawberries grow best in the 70ºs.

They still produce with this cooler, lower than optimal temperature, but at a very slow rate.

Here at J.R. Organics, we only harvest the ripest berries. This means we have to keep a close eye on them. Because we grow a large amount, we are able to move through the fields, harvesting daily where strawberries are ripe.

This year, we are growing six different varieties. As we get deeper into the season we will introduce the different varieties and flavors.

We expect to have enough ripening daily to be able to put them in the box later this month!

They are a hot commodity - flying off market tables quickly - so come down early to get your hands on them.

If you don’t want to wait or can’t come out early, that’s okay.

They are now in our online store as an add-on item. Go to our online store to add some to your box!

Did you know? Tomatoes are indeterminate!

This means that as long as they have water and healthy soil, they will continue to grow and produce fruit.

We still have abundant cherry tomatoes at the market. Some are grown in the greenhouse, and some continue to grow outside, even in this cold weather. The short daylight hours and near freezing temperatures have the plants looking a little tired, but they still grow delicious fruit!

Come down to the market to try our cherry tomatoes and see for yourself.

Yes! Weekend markets are here again, and the weather looks good!

Our Super Sweet Sugar Snap Peas continue to produce beautifully (they have enjoyed all the cool wet weather).

We also have lots of flavor-packed cherry tomatoes at all markets.

Strawberries are finally ripening at higher quantities and we will be better supplied. We may still run out, because they are super popular. Come out early to make sure you get yours.

Our greens and root vegetables continue to be in abundant supply. They love the colder temperatures (except when they freeze).

SPRING is fast approaching and you will gradually see more variety trickle in. Look out for our soft squashes (zucchini, gold bar squash, crookneck squash, romanesco squash, and eight ball squash) at your market.

Of course, everything is organic. Grab a friend and come on down for a morning at the market!

🌼Marigolds🌼
Organically grown in San Diego by J R Organics CSA Farm are available in bunches at your local Jimbo’s!
❔DID YOU KNOW?
🌼Originally called Mary’s Gold, these were named after the Virgin Mary, and in Mexico known as cempaichitl (flower of the dead). Marigolds are essential in the celebration of Dia de los Mu***os
🌼Marigolds are native to North and South America. Portuguese sailors discovered these flowers in Brazil more than four centuries ago and spread them throughout the world.
🌼Marigolds contain a natural pest repellant averting mosquitos and other insects.
🌼The actual floral scent doesn’t come from its flowers! Instead, comes from the stems and leaves. If you don’t want the smell, remove the leaves.

Peppers are consistently on the EWG’s dirty dozen list, so it’s especially important to source them organically. Kids are crazy about their mini sweet bell peppers. They are easy to snack on as the seed pocket inside is exceptionally small. They are easy to chop and have lots of flesh. You can bite right into them. They have no heat, lots of crunch and LOTS of flavor. Find them on at MainStreet Oceanside’s certified Farmers Market Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Pier View Way from Ditmar Street to Tremont Street across North Coast Highway.

We are proud to source our organic strawberries locally from J R Organics CSA Farm. Located just up the road in North County, J.R. Organics is a fourth generation family farm that is California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) certified. All of their produce is grown in the purest way possible...including the 10,000 pounds of strawberries that are being added to our strawberry brews this season!

We believe every beer should tell a story. As we celebrate our fifth year in partnership with J.R. Organics, we took our team to the farm to taste the strawberries, check out the fields where they were grown, and get to know the family that grew them. From our brewers to our beertenders, everyone had the opportunity for a hands-on experience to connect with the ingredients. Because of this experience, we can convey the rich story behind the beer—the organic farm, the multi-generational family, the sweetest San Diego strawberries—and enrich your experience when you taste it in your glass.
