At J R Organics, a traditional family farm, quality vegetables and fruit are grown using the finest fertilizers and the latest in organic cultivation. Produce is delivered within 24 hours of harvest for superior flavor and nutritional value. The farm was originally homesteaded by the Rodriguez family in the early 1950's and has been CCOF certified organic since 1986. We grow everything from arugula to zucchini including strawberries, cantaloupes and watermelons. You can buy our exceptional produce through the CSA program. Strawberry Watch 2027 — week 2: a closer look at field preparation.

The compost has been spread, and the field has been disked. Disking mixes the compost into the soil and breaks up large clumps of dirt as we prepare the ground for the strawberry crop.

You can also see the aftermath of the weekend’s rain. The furrows hadn’t been made yet, so water ran through the lowest parts of the field, creating crevices in the soil. The field will be worked again this week as preparation continues.

Field preparation is part of the strawberry story, long before the berries arrive. We’ll keep checking in each Wednesday evening as this field progresses toward the main season in March.

Green beans are here in our CSA boxes and at our farmers market stands. While we harvest the current crop, we’re also working on the next one.

The field shown here is expected to be ready around Thanksgiving. The tractor is burying weeds as we work toward that later harvest.

That’s how one crop can be on your table while another is still weeks away in the field. Pick up some fresh green beans at our market stands, or enjoy them in your CSA box.

Summer crops meet fall favorites in this week’s CSA boxes. The regular box includes red kuri squash alongside sweet peppers and summer squash, while the small box brings broccolini and orange sweet potatoes. Both have two heads of lettuce, cucumbers, Reed avocado and apples.

Fall color is showing up in more than the produce at our market stands.

Our dry bouquets are made with fresh flowers selected to dry and last for months without water. For these bouquets, skip the vase water and let the flowers dry.

Our new summer squash field is producing, even as we move further into fall and grocery store summer squash starts coming from farther away.

Here in Escondido, our location and mild winters give Farmer Joe the opportunity to keep growing summer squash beyond its usual season. Each planting is a decision about the weather and what the field can support.

The squash pictured here is at our Little Italy market stand.

It’s still being grown locally, right here on the farm.

Even in 100-degree heat, our crew is out in the field growing and harvesting food for the community. Farming is our calling, and the work depends on people who keep showing up through demanding conditions.

Behind the kabocha in this field are many rising costs — costs associated with the people tending the crop, the water that keeps it growing, the equipment to harvest and bring it to market. When you shop at our market stands, you support our work and the everyday costs of keeping the farm running.

Our pepper season is nearing its exit, about two to three more weeks away.
