It may feel like summer outside, but fall is starting to make its way into the market. 🎃

We’re down to our **last bin of Durst Watermelons for the season** — super sweet, deep red, and they’ve been so good to us all summer. 🍉 And **fresh local strawberries picked this morning** are here too! 🍓

🌿 FROM THE FIELD TO THE KITCHEN: Asian Pears
In our Field Notes on Asian pears, we shared what makes them special — crisp like an apple, juicy like a pear, and delicately sweet. 🍐 Now for the fun part… what can you make with them?

💜We especially love them chilled and eaten cold — that cool, juicy crunch is when they’re at their best. But they’re also wonderful paired with savory ingredients.

One of our favorite easy ways to enjoy them is Asian Pear & Burrata Sourdough Toast — toasted sourdough topped with cool, creamy burrata, thin slices of chilled Asian pear, Chandler walnuts, a drizzle of local honey, and a little fresh thyme.
It has a little bit of everything in one bite: cool and crisp, creamy, sweet, savory, and crunchy.

WEDNESDAY at Sunberry 🍣🎃🍯 It’s SUSHI Wednesday at Sunberry Marketplace! Stop in and choose from a variety of fresh rolls, and pair yours with a Classic Thai Milk Tea or Strawberry Guava — with or without boba. 🧋

We’ve also restocked Wildflower HONEYCOMB from Moon Shine Trading Co. in Woodland. They’re also behind The HIVE and Z Specialty Food, where you can taste more than 30 varieties of honey and explore pollinator gardens designed to connect people with bees, plants, and local agriculture. 🍯🐝

PUMPKIN PATCH UPDATE: Our U-Pick Pumpkin Patch is now open daily during store hours, 11–7 PM. Check in with us at the register first, then head on back to the patch. 🎃

Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss & Waste 🌱
💰The average American consumer loses about $728 a year on food that never gets eaten — nearly $3,000 for a family of four.

Part of that waste comes from throwing food away too soon. A “Best if Used By” date generally refers to peak quality, not necessarily the day a food becomes unsafe. Understanding the difference can help us waste less — and save money.

Another simple shift? Buy only what you need, shop more often.

That’s one thing we love about a small local market. Stop in for produce today, come back for bread, fruit, mushrooms or vegetables when you need them. Smaller shops can mean fresher food at home and less forgotten in the refrigerator.

In many places around the world, neighborhood markets and farm stands make this kind of shopping part of everyday life. We’d love to see more of it here.

Yesterday was Chuseok — Korean Thanksgiving — one of Korea’s biggest traditional holidays and a celebration of the autumn harvest.

It also falls right around the time wild mushrooms come into season, so my mom made one of our favorites for the store: chanterelle japchae — Korean sweet potato glass noodles with vegetables, loaded with wild chanterelles and baby chanterelles, plus shiitake, oyster and nameko mushrooms from our farm.

Chanterelles are especially wonderful this way. They stay tender and meaty, with a delicate earthy flavor that soaks up the sauce without getting lost in the noodles.

But my favorite might be the baby chanterelles — those tiny orange caps. They’re nutty, a little sweet, and have this wonderfully firm, almost bouncy bite to them.

If you’re out in Esparto this weekend, come by Sunberry, wander through the pumpkin patch, and see what else we’re harvesting and bringing into the market. 🎃🍄

Having Mom make 10 rolls for the family is one thing… making nearly 80 rolls each week is another! We’re still learning — improving consistency, refining the process, and figuring out what works best as we grow. Your continued support is what makes it worth doing, and we’re grateful for the chance to keep getting better each week.
