Essex Farm is founded on a simple, radical desire: We wanted our members to know what it’s like to eat whole food, in accordance with the seasons, and in harmony with what each year gives us. Throughout the year we organize a number of farm workdays for members to come out and experience the land that feeds us. We also provide farm tours throughout the year, and will soon be introducing a delicious weekly experience: Food Fridays at the Farm. Essex Farm Institute
Generating the leaders of the new farm movement, Essex Farm Institute is an agricultural education and research institution that aims to train farmers to build resilient, diversified farms that are economically viable, socially responsible and environmentally beneficial. We strive to redefine farming as meeting fundamental human needs and we envision a future where farms power themselves, their communities and the world from the energy of the sun.

Dear Members,

The first week in October lived up to its promise as one of the most glorious weeks of the year here. We got golden sunshine, crisp air, and brightly colored trees for days, plus, this incomparable food. Who can complain, even if rain and frost are on us? We did see a light frost this week, which took out the green beans and basil. But the other tender favorite, peppers, survived, so there are snacking peppers still out there that you are welcome to pick yourselves. Raspberries are still with us too, and though the wind took out some of the ripe ones yesterday, there are plenty of beauties still on the canes for picking. Choose the ripe-ripe ones, and be stunned by your good fortune.

We still have so many delicious greens pouring in -- from the familiar and mild romaine heads to briskly bitter red radicchio, with the healthy, hearty dark greens in between. My favorite quick lunch for myself this week was a cheaty variation on this Provencal greens soup, made with chicken stock I had in my fridge and leftover cooked collards that were asking for a new way to get eaten. Five minutes to delicious, for real. You can use kale, or chard, or whatever you brought home from the farm. The fun part is swirling in the eggs, which turn this soup from a first course into a meal.

We have lots of beautiful cauliflower and broccoli. I toggled between them each night this week for dinner, and switched up steamed versions with pans of oven roasted.

The report from the field suggests that we may see Brussels sprouts today, just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving.

We are offering butter OR fresh cream this week. Please check limits. Finally, remember, we've switched over to Drifter's Loaf bread for sale on Fridays in the Farm Store, with Crown Point on hold until spring.

With gratitude, Kristin

The farm store traffic has dwindled, so we're reverting to the low season bakery schedule: Drifter's Loaf arrives on Fridays and will be for sale until we run out. We'll look forward to Crown Point's breads and pastries in the spring.

Beth reminded me that the distribution trailer is chock full of greens again. They really are most bountiful at the beginning and the end of the season! There's beautiful romaine, plus kale, collards, and so much more. There is plenty of spinach right now, too - enough for freezing - but it is not quite as sweet as it will be after frosts. Squash and pumpkins are all in, but they need to cure before we eat them. Except for the delicata which is perfect now. Butternut should be ready in about three weeks.

We are going to run short on onions this year. We did not get a good crop. However, we have so many other delicious alliums. I'm leaning on the leeks right now, in place of onions. They are so good, and they are bountiful. We have chives and scallions that are gorgeous too. If you can be sparing with the onions while we have other options, we'll get to use those storage onions later in the winter.

We had a little glitch in the dairy this week and will not have fresh cream. But fear not, all was not lost, and the fresh cream went into the butter supply. Please check limits in the dairy cooler, to make sure everyone gets a fair share.
With gratitude,
Kristin

Dear Members,

We won't have Crown Point Bread and Pastry this weekend, but we will have Drifter's Loaf, delivered Friday, for as long as it lasts.

The vegetable selection is amazing. Tomatoes are finished, but fall crops are rolling in. We still have tons of peppers and cucumbers this week! Enjoy this delicious intersection of the end of summer and beginning of fall.

We're looking for a couple of volunteers to take over Marion and David's spots at glass wash. Their last day is October 19th. Huge thanks to the two of them for a long stretch at the glass wash sink! It's a couple hours per week, early in the week. Good conversation guaranteed!

Thanks, members, for helping make our green world spin.

With gratitude,
Kristin
