Any way you “slice it!” , pannino imbottito or imbottito panino, ( Italian phrase meaning “ stuffed bread “ ) Nazzareno Romano created the Stromboli sandwich using the item but with artesian bread , not pizza dough , and ❤️ of course!

The Italian term you are looking for is panino imbottito, which literally translates to "stuffed little bread".Here is a breakdown of the terms used in Italy for stuffed bread:

Panino Imbottito: The most common Italian equivalent to an American hero, hoagie, or deli sandwich. The word panino means "small bread" (a single roll), and imbottito is Italian slang/colloquial for "stuffed" or "padded."

Panuozzo: A popular Neapolitan street food. It is essentially made with pizza dough, baked, cut open, and stuffed with meats, cheeses, and vegetables like a traditional sandwich.

“ STROMBOLI” : While largely an Italian-American invention, the term refers to pizza dough ( not pizza dough but italian bread dough ) rolled up into a cylinder and stuffed with meats, cheeses, and sauce before being sliced.Panzerotti: Small, folded, and deep-fried ( not deep fried , shoukd be baked in own after raising , just as itaian bread is ) pockets of dough stuffed with fillings like tomato and mozzarella. The original created by Nazzareno Romano in 1950 was stuffed with lunchmeat as , cheese , and roasted bell peppers .

Stromboli is one of those foods Pennsylvania can proudly point at and say, “Yep, that was us.” The most widely credited origin story takes it back to Romano’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Essington, just outside Philadelphia, where Italian immigrant Nazzareno Romano is said to have created it around 1950 by rolling pizza dough around meats, cheese, and peppers, then baking it into the glorious stuffed loaf we know today. The name reportedly came from the 1950 movie Stromboli, which was all over the news at the time. So while it feels like something that must have come straight from Italy, stromboli is really an Italian-American Pennsylvania invention, born in a neighborhood pizza shop and somehow perfect for every party tray, football Sunday, and “I’ll just have one slice” lie we’ve told ourselves ever since.

As a restaurant owner , you occasionally get to have moments like the one I had last week with these two handsome young gentlemen, and to experience their excitement , visiting Romano’s for their first time , seems to make all the hardwork and effort worthwhile .

I just happened to be loading the soda cabinet next to their booth when i heard a small voice ask me ,….“ what is it like to be the family business that created the stromboli sandwich?”
He quickly followed that question with 6 or 7 more, roughly all the same line of thought.
It was their first visit to Romano’s , which of course is “the birthplace of stromboli”, ….and they had come with their parents to experience the Delco landmark for themselves.
They were a very curious , excited pair of youngsters and the conversation that ensued between myself and these two “ new customers “ after one parent whispered to them , “ it think he is the owner” …… simply put , “ made my day .”
I am seeing more new visitors at Romano’s these days as the weather warms up and more visitors stop into Romano’s while in Philadelphia during this years 250th anniversary of our nation’s “Declaration of Independence!”
Many are coming in to experience one of the most iconic food spots in the area that just happens to be the place where the stromboli sandwich was born 76 years ago . I guess that officially makes the stromboli sandwich a “ 76er!” ❤️ 😜

Thank you “ Mom and Dad “, for stopping in and bringing along two of the most pleasant , well behaved , and “ curious “ young persons that i have had the pleasure of speaking to in a long time .
It was absolutely precious!
