When I saw the news this evening of Wendell Berry's passing, I pulled from the shelf my copy of A Continuous Harmony: Essays Culural and Agricultural - the first of his books that I read more than 3 decades ago. Some of the seeds sown then continue to bear fruit in my life:

"...it is not the area of a country that makes its value or its most meaningful strength, but its life, the depth and richness of its topsoil."

"You can best serve civilization by being against what usually passes for it."

"At home the great delight is to see the clover and grass now growing on places that were bare when we came. These small healings of the ground are my model accomplishment--everything else I do must aspire to that. While I was at that work the world gained with every move I made, and I harmed nothing."

A Kentucky farmer, he railed against agribusiness and championed small family farms and the environment, winning widespread acclaim.

This year's severe drought (only 2" of rainfall all year at our house) turned our annual soil and grass monitoring into an assessment of our pastures' drought resilience. With guidance from Ann Adams of Holistic Management International (and some supervision from Magpie!), we gathered data from 8 different transects across the two properties where we've been implementing regenerative grazing practices for the last 4 years. Ann hasn't yet crunched all the data, but the preliminary results indicate that our hard work has paid off, with most of the pastures still in better condition than when we started - despite the drought. See the links in the comments to read more about what we've been learning through this monitoring process.
