One of our favorite ewes over the years, Eyeliner, birthed a gorgeous little ewe yesterday on Earth Day (along with 11 other lambs born in the flock!). We can’t wait to watch this little one grow. The thriving new life at Blue Dasher was a great way to celebrate Earth Day on the farm. We hope you all had a fabulous day also!

Join Christina for our hands-on workshop on starting no-till garden beds at Blue Dasher Farm!

Christina began growing cut flowers at Blue Dasher by planting spring-blooming bulbs in the fall of 2022, then building her first no-till beds in the spring of 2023. Ever since she has continued to experiment with no-till, pesticide-free flower beds while incorporating cover crops and livestock.

The Blue Dasher Flower beds are designed into the landscape of the homestead, and metrics of success are not measured only by sales or yields, but include that the production of flowers are safe and enjoyable for the family, and that the amount of biodiversity and habitat are grown. Blue Dasher is creating a space of robust, diverse life that feels good to spend time in.

In this workshop, we will discuss how she grows flowers utilizing these methods, by starting from seed in soil blocks in the greenhouse. We will then move outside and build one of the no-till beds so you will have some hands-on experience and discussions.

We are loving all the peacocks showing off right now! Starting way back in 2021 with our first pair of peafowl (Ricky and Lucy), we have now grown our flock to 10! Ricky and Lucy were pied or piebald peafowl, meaning that they have random splashes of white on their plumage. We have since then acquired a black-shouldered peahen (Ethel), an India blue male peacock (Eddie), along with all of their various offspring that they have raised here on the farm, expressing colors that vary between pied and solid white.

In this video, you see Eddie (the India Blue) and Michael (the solid white offspring of Ricky and Lucy) shaking and fanning those beautiful tail feathers.

JUST LOOK AT IT!! 🦚😃

What a beautiful spring view! Our sheep are looking beautiful and ready to lamb any day! We do have one lamb from our beautiful bottle ewe Aster, and we are happy to report she’s her an excellent mother and caretaker. Look at this beautiful guy! He’s got wonderful genetics so if you’re interested in a future ram let us know and we will keep him intact!

10 years ago today, Ecdysis Foundation and Blue Dasher Farm were founded. 🥳

They were formed simultaneously because we believe that if we’re going to be researchers for farmers and ranchers, we better be farmers and ranchers ourselves.
Blue Dasher Farm is a working farm in eastern South Dakota and the headquarters of the nonprofit research organization, Ecdysis Foundation.

Our research starts with the questions farmers, ranchers, and beekeepers are asking, and we involve them directly in the work.

Here's to 10 more years of research, farming, and continued growth. 🎉

Is anyone else excited to see the spring and summer life on the farm?

We have begun planting our flower seeds in the greenhouse, ready for another year of cut flowers and herbs to blanket the farm and bring in all of the busy buzzing life.

Stay tuned for how to get ahold of our flowers! This year we hope to do more:

With 20 years of beekeeping experience, Bobbie brings deep knowledge to every workshop. When you sign up for her Beekeeping Workshop Series, you’re opening the door to a world of knowledge from our beloved beekeeper.

But what truly sets Bobbie apart is her spirit and approach. As she says, “Developing friendships and kindness is key. We can gather more bees with honey than with vinegar.” Beyond building skills, this is exactly what we hope to create through this series: friendship, community, and a shared love of beekeeping.

Here's a bit of Bobbie’s background so you can get to know the person behind the veil. Her journey began after reading The Secret Life of Bees, which inspired her to learn everything she could about honeybees.

"I joined the Connecticut Beekeepers Association, which is the oldest beekeeping club in America, and I also completed the Cornell Master Beekeeper’s program. I realized that if I wanted to be a caretaker for these incredible creatures, I wanted to learn as much as I could.

I took three years to educate myself before I started my first hive! That first day of actually being a beekeeper was so amazing. I invited 10 friends to come and have a “pollinator lunch” and then help me install. The honeybees have always offered a venue for not only learning and caretaking for honeybees, but also for community, camaraderie, and teaching with friends.

I moved back to South Dakota four years ago and started with Ecdysis Foundation as the beekeeper for Blue Dasher Farm. It was then I realized there were a lot of people interested in honeybees, but folks didn’t know a lot about how to do it. Even the city of Brookings asked me to help them with an ordinance to allow honeybees in town! It was unanimously passed!

I had such wonderful experiences in Connecticut with the gathering of people at my bee club, that our Ecdysis team thought it would be a terrific way to give back to South Dakota, which has an incredibly rich history of beekeeping. We also have a desire to be a part of the local agricultural community, support local beekeepers, and help people who want to learn about beekeeping.”

If you’ve been curious about beekeeping, or if you’ve kept bees for years and want to deepen your skills and connections, this series is for you.
