National Park Week officially begins with Kickoff Saturday! Shenandoah National Park became the southeast's first National Park because its proximity to Washington D.C. Even today, that proximity creates many opportunities for activities around Shenandoah! Within just 100 miles, you can find dozens of ways to celebrate America's 250th birthday:

March 21-September 7, 2026 | We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth, an exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture celebrating the many people who have made Virginia special

June 14, 2025-July 5, 2027 | Un/Bound: Free Black Virginians, 1619-1865, an exhibition presented by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture telling the stories of Free Black Virginians

July 4, 2026-March 26, 2028 | Revolutionary Valley, an exhibition by the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley telling the story of the Shenandoah Valley before, during, and after the American Revolution

August 21-23, 2026 | VA250 Mobile Museum Experience at Long Branch Historic House and Farm in Boyce, Va. The mobile museum will be coming to Skyline Drive on October 5-7! — UPDATE as of 08/24: The mobile museum will not be in the park this year.

August 22-23, 2026 | Freedom 250 Grand Prix, an IndyCar Series race around the National Mall

August 23, 2026 | Liberty or Death Reenactment, where costumed actors will recreate the Second Virginia Convention of March 1775 in historic St. John's Church, Richmond, Va.

August 27, 2026 | Tsenacommacah and the World the English Entered, a talk with Indigenous cultural preservationist and educator Christopher Lee Custalow about the pre-Colonial lives of Indigenous Virginians

August 28-September 7, 2026 | Hungry for History Food Event, a weeklong celebration of Colonial-era history and food at a variety of sites around Wi******er, Va.

🚧 REMINDER: ROAD CLOSURE — JULY 15, 2026 🚧

Madison County Fireman’s Parade

North Main Street, from Waverly Yowell Elementary School to the Madison Firehouse, will close beginning at 5:30 p.m. Only parade participants will be permitted in the closed area.

Main Street will close to through traffic at 6:00 p.m. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the roadway will remain closed until the parade concludes.

Please use caution when traveling in the area, as there will be increased pedestrian traffic and parade spectators. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route when possible.
